Help with Panasonic DMP-BD30

I have a Panasonic DMP-BD30 connected to a Yamaha RX-V661 receiver. Currently I have video/audio running over HDMI. I am confused about the audio format capabilities of this combination.

As best I can tell, there is no way to take advantage of lossless audio formats over the HDMI or digital audio cables. Would I be better off running analog 5.1 out to my receiver?

Thanks.

Ruh roh.

Tough combo. That player can only bitstream the new codecs, and that receiver cannot decode those bitstreams. Either you need to have a player that can have pre-decoded mch PCM sent to the Yammy, or you need a new receiver to be able to decode the raw bitstreams.

Mch analogs won't do it. If you are totally stuck on these components for now, just use optical in the meanwhile.

Yep. The only high res audio he can get out of that player are tracks done with DD+, DTS-HD HR (both rare on Blu) and PCM. No DTS-HD MA (other than the DTS core) or Dolby TrueHD (other than the companion DD track if there is one).

OK, thanks anyway. I guess I don't have any complaints about the way it is now, I just wanted to be sure I was getting the best possible audio my equip would allow.

Optical is a bad idea as he would lose multichannel PCM which is high res audio. HDMI or multichannel analog outs (save it for SACD) is the way to go with this player/receiver combo.

Didn't know he could get mch PCM with those connections. Perhaps he should use both optical and mch analogs, and switch depending on the codecs available, as I just presume the receiver is going to have better bass mgmt than the player for the times the source will be lossy. Thanks.

Most definetely, in his case, the only way to get lossless audio is thru the MC analogues though. In other hand, the BD media must have a PCM track (5.1 uncompressed..), otherwise he'll be listening to the DD/DTS core tracks.

Sorry, I forgot to tell the OP that he needs to go to the audio setup on the BD-30 and set the audio output to PCM (not bitsream), in order to hear the lossless audio thru MC analogues in it's full glory :)

Why can't he use HDMI? A 661 won't decode DD+, DTHD, DTS-HD HR/MA but will accept multichannel PCM over HDMI.

HDMI is the way to go. The receiver will then handle the bass management, distance settings, room correction, etc. With multichannel analogs, the player has to do all that.

You're right Allargon,

my bad, as I didn't realise he's alrealdy using HDMI, as he states on first post.
Yeah, HDMI is the best way to go, indeed!
