[I think I originally placed this question in the wrong forum (gaming).
Apologies for the newbee-ness :)]

Hello everyone,

I am trying to get surround sound from my PS2, that I have connected through optical SPDIF to my PCI soundcard.

I do get sound but its only stereo. Of course I am trying with a game that outputs dolby digital.

Anyone with experience on the matter?

Thanks

A quick follow-up:

It seems that SPDIF is inherently Stereo, but you can have surround sound through AC3 compression.

I have tried the AC3filter for the PC, but although it can do a great deal of stuff, it cannot at the moment decode Dolby Digital or Dolby ProLogic II input from an optical SPDIF :(

If anyone has a solution to the problem, go right ahead. I will keep searching and will report back for future troubled people.

What kind of sound card are you using?
You need to find out if it supports Dolby Digital decoding first of all. Secondly, you need to find out if your PS2 is sending an MPCM signal (multi-channel PCM) instead of the standard (stereo) pcm, which according to my understanding, is how it's usually done.

I have experience with getting sound from the PC into the receiver, but haven't really had any experience getting sound INTO the PC :p Make sure your PS2 is outputting SPDIF pass-through, and not the decoded signal.

Thank you for the reply evilcat.

I am using a cheap 7.1 soundcard, that I just got for the optical input to hook my PS2.

It's this model here: (oops, the forum won't let me post links, I'll disguise it) [www].cmedia.com.tw/?q=en/PCI/CMI8768

On the matter of the signal, I have tried 2 different games that support Dolby Prologic II sound. Made sure all options were on and everything.

I have no idea how to make sure my "PS2 is outputting SPDIF pass-through, and not the decoded signal".

Thanks for the help, I'll keep trying till I get it fixed.
