Help with Optical Challenges with Denon 2802

I'm out of ideas, other than trying another optical cable so I thought I'd ask for expert guidance.

I have a Denon 2802, never used the optical ports before, but now trying to get my Mac Mini to connect using a Toslink to Mini M/M OD:5.0mm cable.

I've used the on screen guide to assign the optical port to VDP, also tried DVD, but nothing get's me sound. I tried pluging an ipod in as well in case the mini was the issue but got nothing. I swear I can hear faint sound out of my center speaker if I crank the volume as high as it will go. I've tried all 3 optical ports, none of them work.

Any suggestions on things to try?

Hi. Some things come to mind to check:

1. Make sure that you've taken the plastic caps off the end of the cables (the clear caps that cover the ends). If you haven't, take those off and things will probably start working.
2. After plugging the cable into the Mac Mini and without plugging the other end into the receiver, check if you can see a red light coming from the end of the cable that you'd normally plug into the receiver. If you can, then the cable is transmitting a signal. If not, it isn't.
3. If the cable isn't transmitting a signal, play a file with audio (although I don't think that's necessary) and check if the light shows up. If not, check the menus on the Mac Mini to make sure that it's set-up to output digital audio through that port. If the computer is set up right and you still don't see a light, then it certainly might be the cable.

Thanks for the suggestions but I believe it's a hardware problem. The mini iI have is an older mac and I found a few forums online that suggest the G4 processor can't produce digital audio. Suggestion is to get a USB adapter device...
