Help with my new speakers

hey everyone, i just unpacked my new BA VR3s. I noticed that inside the port hole there is some soft matierial cloth in there, Am i supposed to keep that in there or remove it??

It's not a port if it's plugged. Get the stuffing out and let em breathe.

...that cloth inside is probably damping material, to absorb the internal (in cabinet) sound waves, reduse resonanses, vibration etc.
many speakers have this stuff inside!
it obviously has dropped of the port during the shipping...

well, all i can say is i am going to leave them in for now, I emailed Boston and see what they say. i hear the customer service is terrible so i probably wont hear back. As we speak i am watching spider man and these speakers sound incredible!!!!! I have the VR3s as fronts, VR910 for center, Axiom QS8s for surround and pv1000 as a sub. These speakers have incredible clarity, i am going to leave the cloth in until i hear from them or hear from a reliable source. For the price of both VR3s i paid 570$ a killer deal, I may upgrade the center eventually to VR920 or VR12.

Feel free to remove it but it's likely to affect the performance of your speakers. Lots of speakers have some kind of wadding designed to keep internal reflections down. If it's falling out a bit, just poke it back in.

An interesting test to do *before* you get the response from BA is to listen to the speakers with and without the material and make note of what sounds best to your ears. Once you hear back from BA, see if what they tell you matches your personal choice.

My old HSU VTF2 came with "plug" for the port. It's made of a soft, foam like material. You use the plug in for max extension and leave it out to get it to play a bit lower,or visa versa, I for get which is witch at the moment. In any case I always have it leave it in low extension mode since I can not hear a difference either way.

it is more likely to be what emorphien wrote

i wouldnt suggest to remove it because you might not be able to put it back properly in case you discover that the speaker sounds worse without it...
there might be a big piece of material inside
in my speakers i can see this kind of material through the bass-reflex port,
and some people even open theyre's speakers to add some more such material to make spks cabinet totaly dead
