Help with multi room set up, power requirements

Hey guys,

I've got a wedding at my house soon, and I need to get my audio straight.
My speakers were installed professionally when the house was built, I'm not sure of their wattages. I have 5 rooms with 2 pairs of speakers in each room.
They are all wired into my audio cabinet, which has just a left and right speaker jack from my receiver. All my rooms have a volume control knob from adjusting each room's sound level. The installers left one more speaker wire dangling in the basement for when I later wanted to run a pair of outdoor speakers. Everything was working great until I bought a pair of outdoor speakers to connect to this wire. Somehow in my wiring, I think I cross connected some wires and blew my receiver. I promptly unwired it so I'm back to where I started, however the new receiver that I bought keeps turning off and on like it is underpowered (which it may be).

I'd like to get my system back in running order, so I'm wondering what power requirements I need to run essentially 6 pairs of speakers. I want them all to use the same source. Do I need an amp? If so, what kind? Essentially I only have one set of speaker connections for all these, I'm assuming there is some sort of distribution block behind that connection plate.

The receiver that was working was an old Sony 900 series, I replaced it with a Sony 800 series receiver but like I said, it is cutting off an on.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

For a system like this, a receiver won't cut it. Do you have a list/invoice of the components that were installed? An amp may help, but if the VCs or something else isn't included to handle lower impedances the amp won't help.

I've got a call in with the installer

I can't give specifics on the speakers, but they look like 4-5 inch nutones.

While you've got the installer on the line, you should inquire as to wether those volume controls are of the "impedance matching" variety. ...very important to know.

Yes, hopefully they did the right thing and used a Speaker Distribution Hub and IMVCs. If so, a good 2-channel amp should suffice.
