Happy Christmas, everyone!

OK, I picked up an SR7001 to demo from the dealer...it works great so far, but I have one question. My current DVD player has only component video out (no HDMI). I have connected my satellite receiver to the 7001 via HDMI and output via HDMI from the AVR to the display. That works great (audio and video). However when I input the component cable from the DVD player (480p) and set the 7001 to convert to HDMI, the signal that comes up on the display is 4:3 instead of 16:9. Is there any way I can make it a 16:9 signal, or is that just a limitation of converting from component to HDMI?

Since the receiver is only switching and up-converting, it has no impact on the format. Sounds like you need to look into the DVD player's video out settings.

Either that, or you could set that in the TV itself.

My Tv allows this feature. Yours might as well. Of course, you do realize that to fit a 4:3 image onto a full 16:9 screen, it will involve "strecthing" the picture to meet the edges. And, since no TV or DVD player can just make up what was never recorded in the first place, everything will appear short and squat.

Me, personally, I would rather live with an undistorted picture and black bars on the side than live with a distorted picture, but YMMV.

The SR7001 converts component to HDMI, but it won't upconvert the signal. If you input 480p via component, it will output 480p via HDMI. Since 480p is 4:3, then the image on the screen will be 4:3. You would have to change the setting on your DVD player if you want it to output 720p or 1080i, which are 16:9.

Actually, I don't want to stretch the 4:3 signal to 16:9. My problem is that when I play a widescreen DVD (either 16:9 or 2.35:1), it is squeezing the picture into a 4:3 frame. My DVD player is set to output to a 16:9 screen.

I did figure out that if I switch my TV to recognize 4:3 content as "full mode" instead of "normal mode", a widescreen 16:9 picture appears for both 4:3 and 2.35:1 movies. This is with my DVD player passing through the receiver.

However, when I connect the DVD directly to the display, with the TV on "normal 4:3 mode", it automatically detects a widescreen movie and displays it at 16:9. So, it would appear to me that with the receiver in circuit, the AVR is doing something to the signal so that the display is recognizing even 16:9 content only as 4:3 content and thus displaying it in a squeezed in 4:3 frame. This is not happening when I input a 16:9 signal or 4:3 signal from my sat box at 1080i via HDMI into the AVR and out from the AVR to the display via HDMI again.
