Hi i recently purchased an LCD TV with 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i formats
but i have an old DVD player i think that supports up to 480p and connected to the LCD TV via component

The LCD TV also has S-video and DVI inputs available... would buying a new DVD player with DVI output change the quality of my pictures?

Any help would be appreciated

Look into upconverting DVD players, you should get a slightly better picture from them. You will most likely need to get a DVI/HDMI cable for the connection because the DVD player will have HDMI. Check out Bluejeanscable.com for this.

Yes, finding a DVD player that will support the higher resolutions will by default improve your picture. DVI/HDMI are not always required, there are several DVD players that support upto 1080i over their component jacks as well. However, if you're worried about HDCP then HDMI would be preferable.

If the new DVD player only has an HDMI port you can always get an HDMI cable that will make use of both connection types HDMI/DVI. Good luck and enjoy your new LCD :)
