Hey All!

So I bought a Marantz SR-3001 used but properly refurbished, and saw the receiver tested on the channels to confirm they are working. Every channel works perfectly, the only problem is, 8 or 9 times out of 10 when I turn it on, there is a bunch of static, which builds for 5-15 seconds, then a thump, then it goes into Protect Mode. After this it seems to reset after 1-3 seconds, and then it is totally fine, can be cranked up, powered bass/amplifier can be cranked up, no problem.

The one thing I can think of as a cause, is that I also attached 2 speakers from my old Panasonic Blu-Ray home theater systems. SCH-X10, something like that. Considering the Ohms are slightly different, though not beyond the limit of the receiver, I imagine they might be the culprit. But before I go and chuck them in the bin, and keep the system as 5.1 instead of 7.1, I want to make sure I try everything first. The speakers themselves were not misused, nor cranked up high during 3-5 years of use. Nothing rattling or shaking in them, and the sound seems quite clear. All the connections have been checked rechecked and redone, ensuring there are no wires contacting the wrong spots.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears ! I am more worried I'm doing damage to the life of the speakers by allowing this to continue, and considering money is tight, I would like this to last me more than a few years. Thanks in advance!

Doesn't sound like it was properly refurbished. I got nothing searching for your SCH-X10 speakers so maybe it's not like that. What impedance are those speakers? Some HTIB speaker sets were low impedance, but not likely to trip protection unless played at high volume...what power level is the receiver at on turn-on? Why did you buy such an old receiver and why do you think it was properly refurbished when you have such problems just turning it on?

Maybe try disconnecting all speakers and see if the same problems. Can connect right and left speakers if it turns on right with nothing connected.
