I am in the process of picking out my first turntable system for vinyl. I have been doing a lot of research, and am looking at the following possible components:

Turntable: Pro-ject Debut Carbon ($400) or Music Hall MMF 2.2 ($450)

Amp: Music Hall A15.2 ($500) or Cambridge Audio Topaz AM1 ($350) or Pro-ject Stereo Box S ($300, along with $200 for Phono Box S)

Bookshelf Speakers: Pioneer SP-BS41-LR ($150/pr) or Paradigm Atom v5 ($250/pr) or Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 ($350/pr) or Pro-ject Speaker Box 5 ($350/pr)

My goal is to stay around $1,200 for the whole system. Do you have any recommendations regarding the above components? Any other good ones in this price range?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Vinnie and welcome to the forum!!
First off, the pro-Ject or the Music Hall tt's will work fine. The amp is nice, but I would consider a stereo receiver such as the HK 3490 for about 300.00. Another plus to the receiver idea is that you can add a digital source or two and not have to invest in an outboard DAC. I was confused as to why you were allotting 200 for a preamp when the amp you picked already has one built in. No need for one in your proposed setup as long as the amp has a phono input.
Now that we've saved some of your budget for the most important part, the speakers, we can discuss investing where the dividend s will be greatest :)
The pioneers are amazing speakers for the money, although I would opt for the BS-22's. that said, you'll probably want a subwoofer to run with these speakers as you'll likely find them lacking in the bass department. Are you set on stand mount speakers? Towers would likely give you more bass and perhaps negate the need for a subwoofer in a 2 channel system. Another option is stand mounts with a subwoofer ( my choice) giving you the best of both worlds.
So now you have roughly 500.00 for speakers. In that range for bookshelf's (stand mounts), you could do the bs-22's and have about 400. For a sub such as the Hsu STF-2, or just get a pair of KEF q300's for about 500.00 delivered from accessories for less and go with no subwoofer for starters.
For floor stander's, you could try the pioneer FS52's with no sub and save a couple hundred or try some of the excellent internet direct brands such as: Ascend, Aperion, Emp, etc. Whichever way you go, take your time and listen to as many speakers as possible to learn which sound characteristics you prefer.
Cheers, Mac

Thank you for the response.

As for the amp, space is at a premium, and I thought the integrated amps were a little smaller. Assuming I don't care about adding digital sources (I intend this to be a dedicated vinyl setup), will the Cambridge Audio or Music Hall amps be better than the HK 3490? Or do you just generally find the HK 3490 to deliver better sound?
