Help with Denon avr-588

I have a slap dash system a denon receiver, a couple of DPA tower speakers, a polk powered subwoofer, and some Boston Acoustic surrounds. (my BA sub started making terrible buzzing noises, and I haven't decided whether or not I want to try replacing some capacitors.)

So, onto the problem. I got a shiny new mitsubishi tv, and it only has 2 hdmi inputs, and a component video input. I can plug my xbox 360 in to the tv just fine, however when I run it through the receiver in an attempt to get some great sound pumping out for the game, I get no audio from my stereo system, but it still plays through the television speakers.

When I try hooking up the rca cable instead of the hdmi, I can't get it to play or display anything. This has me in a bit of a bind, because now my wife can't play the wii. I have tried using different inputs on the receiver, but have had no luck.

There is also a blu ray player that has the same issues as the xbox which is what makes me think that there is a setting hidden somewhere on the receiver that I need to adjust in order to enjoy my system again. The receiver does crank out plenty of sound when it us set to tuner, but that's not what I bought it for.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, unless I'm reading the owners manual wrong, your Denon cannot play audio from an HDMI input. Check out the top right corner of page 10 of the manual - it explicitly states that audio signal input to the HDMI input cannot be played on the AVR-588. It can and will only pass the audio onto the TV. I'll admit, that's kind of shocking to me, but it is an older receiver.

You'll want to connect another cable for digital audio from your sources to the Denon. The XBox has an optical output, right? I imagine that your blu-ray player also has either an optical or coax digital audio output, but without the model number, we can't check. Check out page 22 of the Denon manual to see how to assign those inputs to your sources.

If you have any questions about that, just let us know.

That helps quite a bit. I plugged in a digital video coax and assigned the appropriate input, and now have audio for my movies. That is definitely a good start to the day.

I have been unable to find a digital or optical output from the xbox, so it is still a bit of a nuisance. When I plug the rca connector into the Denons' vcr input, I don't get any video on the tv or audio from the system.

From what I see online at Microsoft's site, the XBox 360 has a digital audio output. If you have the original version, it looks like you need an adapter (hopefully included in the box and still in your possession).

Thank you for your help. I am not sure if or where I would have the accessories that came with the xbox, as I have had it for a few years. I found an adapter on Amazon that separates the audio from the hdmi, and routes it to an optical output.

One last question, then I will stop pestering you. Do you know if my Denon will take an rca input and output it through the hdmi? I would really like to get the wii hooked up for the wife. And if my receiver won't do this for me, then is there some type of converter that will take an rca input and convert it to an hdmi output?

Ok, so that was 2 questions.

It will upconvert the Wii. You can't go from hdmi to RCA, but you can go from RCA to HDMI.

Ok, so if I plug the rca jacks into the vcr input, what settings are required to get the video to output through the monitor output?
