HELP with Denon 1912 + Wharfedales 10.5, 10.1, 10 MX sub

Hi everyone!

Its been a LONG time that I've been pining for a proper audio system, having been through the usual crap of crappy logitech computer speakers and then to a sony muteki.

Now, I've recently acquired a denon 1912, paired to 2 wharfedale 10.5s, a wharfedale centre speaker, 2 bookshelf 10.1 speakers and a wharfedale 10MX sub.

Thing is, I have a slight issue.

I'm thinking of running this system in my new cafe, which is 2 floors, 15 X 4.5m (metrics, sorry guys!).

I'm thinking of having the amp on the second floor wired to the 2 wharfedale standing speakers (10.5s), and the centre speaker, and having wiring downstairs to the 2 bookshelf speakers and the sub.

What my concerns are:

Will the denon 1912 be able to play the same sound into both the 2 wharfedale standing speakers on level 2 and level 1, instead of making them into 'surround speakers', and is the sound quality going to be affected?

It'll basically be for background music, so it won't be too taxing (I hope) on the speakers. And yes, I'm aware that the 2nd floor will have no subwoofer, and therefore less bass.

Hi edexam22,

Welcome to the Forum. You have no issues, just opportunities. (This is a New Year!) I have the baby brother (Denon 1612) to your receiver in my basement system. A manual is your friend so grab the one for your Denon 1912 here:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjs8OabxKHRAhUH9GMKHTffDXoQFggaMAA&url=http://assets.denon.com/documentmaster/us/owners%20manual_avr1912.pdf&usg=AFQjCNED5T82-qO9ANuS3Vew-90lRNl3wg

The Denon 1912 has a 7.1 configuration which will allow you to assign the Surround Back speaker outputs to a second area (think your second floor) as Zone 2. (See page 56 under Speaker Set-up in the manual.) Those speaker wires connect to the two set of terminals (black & red) on the bottom right in the photo below. You can control the volume to these separately from the mains (your remaining 5.1 speakers). See page 68 for those instructions.

That's a decent Receiver for a starter and hopefully you'll have years of enjoyment from it. I hope this is helpful.

I'd use mono mode and should be fine. Maybe the all-channel stereo mode but for background music mono should be fine and less issues.

It depends on the source material but I'd definitely use the all-channel stereo if I could. (See Page 44 in the manual.)

Thanks so much guys!! =) Sorry - its my first proper receiver and its kinda scary to use. =) All these new buttons and things.

One thing to ask - if I do buy a second subwoofer for upstairs, can I run TWO off the pre out from the amplifier? With one of those single rca to 2 rca splitters?

Also, I do hope I made the right move away from the sony muteki - it was a HTDDW7500, looked hideous, but had 2 subwoofers. =) Which is the reason why I'm wondering if the denon will be able to power 2 subwoofers from the same preout. Especially if the subwoofers are different, with different impedances.

Or can I wire up the subwoofers using speaker cables from the 'surround sound' speaker level output from the amp?

The Denon wouldn't power active subwoofers from the pre-out (pre-out is pre-amplifier output). You can run even more than two active subwoofers on a pre-out, just use a splitter (I've done 4 off a single pre-out no problem). Passive subwoofers most receivers won't do well with, though.

Thank you so much for all the replies. I'm sorry, I'm just a bit confused with regards to the subwoofer. Does this mean that I can have another powered subwoofer r? And does it have to be the same brand and type is my current subwoofer?

Yes, you can have several active subwoofers running off the single pre-out, just split the signal with something like this. Keep in mind that many avrs that have two sub pre-outs (a ".2" avr) are merely an internal splitter, only a few avrs can you actually have separate control of the two sub pre-outs (and even then that's not stereo or two separate LFE channels, it's for setting different delay/level for two subs).

You can mix subs of make/type/size but generally you will be limited by the weaker/less capable sub. Integrating two identical subs tends to be a bit easier. Without adjustment for separate delays (the "distance" setting) you need to keep the subs equidistant from your seating position generally, though.

Integrating a second sub for your second floor is doable although you'll need to manually adjust it's level (on the back of the Sub) to blend in with the speakers there.
