Help with decision - LCD

I'm looking to buy an LCD for my father for fathers day. I stopped in HHGregg today to check out their LCD's. I might also purchase one for myself - based on the deal.

HHGregg's new Sunday ad shows an Olevia 32" for $1289.10 - includes the $150 rebate. They also have the 37" for $1919.10 - includes the rebate.

I asked the manager what he'd do if I bought both of them. He said he'd sell me the 32" for $1299 not including the rebate (net $1149) and the 37" for $1749 (net $1599). So total out of pocket would be
$1299 + $1749 = $3048 x 1.0675% tax = $3253.74 - $300 rebates = $2953.74.

It appears to be a good deal. Knowing these aren't the best LCD's out there, do you think I'd be sorry for spending that much on two tv's for the money, or would getting two higher end 32" and 37" tv's for more $$ prove worthwhile? My parents have been looking at tv's for 6 months now, with a $1000 budget. They like the rear projection 40" specials for $999 but agree they off center viewing is terrible. They just decided to up that budget to $1500 which would mean I could get them the 37" Olevia (I'd buy it and they'd be happy since I didn't go over their budget). Slovak - tight with money!

All opinions welcome.

Since you and I chatted about the Snytax sets a few months ago I've been keeping a close eye on them and been doing some reading here:

I've looked at the Syntax sets several times at Fry's and CompUSA, sometimes they look good and sometimes they don't. Sometimes the response time is fine other times it's not. I think with an HD feed they will be fine but the SD stuff does not look good to me. In reference I think the Sharp's have a much better looking picture. It could be that the signal inputs are of poor quality. But the inconsistency of the picture quality concerns me. I'm thinking a 37" would be a nice replacement for my 31" Panasonic Superflat in my bedroom. But which one? Sounds like Syntax has new sets coming out in the next month or so, you may want to wait until then. It also seems that when the newer sets are available they tend to have a better picture and cost less.

Duff,

Thanks, man. I called Syntax today after that post. They have a new processor called "Idea Technology." I actually spoke with a tech there, and he said the difference between the new models and the current ones is night and day. He said expect a picture equivalent to the Pioneer Elite Plasma's with this new chip. See, if you find a deal too good to be true, it usually is. Damn, I can't win. No tv for the folks or myself. I guess I'll just wait, because I don't settle for second best. Not when technology is changing under my nose.
