Help with Connecting RX-V563 to Panasonic ST60 TV

Hi everyone. This is my first post here in quite some time. Forgot my password and was connected to old email address. Anyway, I just purchased a Panasonic ST60 and needed a little help with the connections. I just moved and ditched the cable box for free over the air antenna. I have a PS3 currently hooked up to the receiver through HDMI and from there to the TV through hdmi. This works great if I want to watch Netflix or Hulu from the PS3, but if I want to watch either over the air TV or stream from the TV I can't figure out how to get sound to my receiver. So my question is, how do I do the connection from TV to receiver and can I make the connection to where I can choose to use the TV speakers or the receiver?

Welcome back! It doesn't look like your Yamaha supports audio return over HDMI, and if not, the best way to do it is to connect the optical audio output from the Panasonic to your Yamaha. That will support the Dolby Digital audio used by over-the-air broadcasts and streaming providers.

You can also turn your TV speakers on and off in the Panasonic's menu system.

Thanks for the reply Adam. So if I hook an HDMI cable from the 2nd HDMI "In" cable and run to HDMI 2 on the TV I should get sound?

You'll want to use the optical connection. I honestly don't know if you can transmit audio from a TV using the ARC HDMI jack if you don't have that HDMI input selected on the TV, but I know the optical connection works great.

Ok, that makes sense. I was just thinking that I would have the antenna option selected on my TV to receive the over air broadcast and there would be no way for the TV to know to use the HDMI jack. Thanks again.

Anytime! Just let us know if you have any other questions. Btw, I've been using over-the-air for several years now and really like it, especially since the switch to digital.

I'm assuming buying a Coax to HDMI convertor would be silly for this purpose? I had in my mind to put a splitter in and run one coax to the Antenna setting and then the other to the HDMI side so if I want surround I can use the HDMI and if I just wanted to watch TV I would use the antenna setting. This is probably too pricy and not worth the effort.

I wouldn't call it silly :), but it's unnecessary. Connecting the antenna feed to the TV, and then using the optical audio output from the TV to your receiver will work great. If you don't want to turn the TV speakers on and off in the menu, you can always just turn the volume on the TV all the way down when you want to use the receiver. The volume control on the TV doesn't affect the optical audio output. I'd say just hit "mute" on the TV, but at least on mine, that will display "mute" on the screen the whole time. If it doesn't show that on yours, then that's an easier option.

Went home and grabbed an extra optical cable, doesn't everyone have an extra laying around, and plugged in and worked like a champ. Thanks again for the help. I do have to turn down the TV volume or else I get an echo affect and the mute symbol stays on. Another funny side note, was watching Avengers on Netflix and had the neighbor come over and ask me to turn down what ever I had going because it was shaking their walls. This was from house to house not in an apartment or duplex. Got to love good action flix with a decent sub.

I have a very similar setup: ST60 TV, Yamaha RXV575 receiver, am streaming TV through Antennae and watching NetFlix through TV.

Here's my problem. When I turn the TV and receiver on (for example by hitting the "TV" setting on my Yamaha remote), no sound comes out of the speakers. If I turn off the receiver and turn it back on, I then get sound.

How do I set up the system, so that I don't have to restart the receiver to get sound?

Thanks,
