Help with choosing A/V Receiver for my 5.1 set-up soon to expand to 7.1

Good Day All, this is my 1st thread so please be patient and help me out...
I have an existing 5.1 system that eventually I would like 7.1, I have Axiom VP100 front speaker, Axiom QS4 surround speakers, and PSB Stratus Silver circa 1991 that still treat me well. I also have a 8" yamaha 75 watt sub that I want to replace with a SVS PB12-NSD. I have a Pioneer 5010FD, and PS3. My room is 12' x 19' x 8' with patio doors and two entry hallways into the space. I like to listen to music 20%, Movies 60% and Gaming (my kids, ok and me) 20%. My current HT receiver is an Onkyo 501 (I think, cant remember for sure but no HDMI yet). The Onk is bullet proof but does run hot, I will also be adding a couple more QS4's down the road to complete the 7.1. Oh yeah, I love to turn it up loud only when no one else is home, but normal listening volume is not too high.

What new receiver do you think would best fit this existing system, budget around 1K US maximum.

Get yourself a Denon 2310 or Onkyo 707 for $550 and put the money saved towards an even bigger, badder sub

I like those two because they have great amp sections, Audyssey MultEQ, and are reasonably priced. Marantz also offers this, but costs a bit more. Pioneer Elite isn't a bad option as well.

Put your money in an Epik Dynasty instead. Upgrade your receiver later.

You are spending 1k on a receiver? I thought why not treat yourself to a real upgrade.

It seems Epik is out of stock though.

Yes. Speakers are the key to a good system. $1k will buy a very nice sub. At this price, I like Epik myself.

Ok, I agree from what I have read that speakers and sub is the key to a good to great system. I will be purchasing the SVS as it is a really good economical sub and I can get it in Canada without alot of grief. Now to drive them I need to upgrade my receiver, so...
Which receiver would work with my existing PSB/Axiom speakers and the SVS sub that I will have
