Help with Cable, TV, and Receiver

Friday I turned 35 years old, and my wife, being awesome, decided to upgrade my home theater system.

I had been rocking a Sony STR-D965 since I was in college (figure I bought it in '97), and the thing worked like a dream, but I ended up having HDMI cables going to my TV , an Insignia NS-P42q-10A, and then Red/ white AV cables going back to my receiver.

I had mentioned wanting to get a new purely HD receiver, so when she came home with a Yamaha RX-V371 I was pretty happy; for about 20 minutes.

Here is where my issue comes in.

I have Mediacom Cable, and they provide one of those crappy little Motorola boxes to use. I have that setup through Co-Ax to my TV.

I then ran a Digital Audio Cable, from the Digital out on my TV, to the AV1 Digital in on the Yamaha Receiver. I followed the instructions and told the receiver that this was the audio for the TV. I got zero sound.

I moved the Audio cable to AV4, changed the settings, and still no sound. (Per the instructions I could set up a Digital Audio on AV1 or AV4)

I then switched to Red/White Audio outs from the TV, to AV5, Audio1, and Audio2. In that order, as they all gave zero sound.

The Tuner function on the Receiver works great, and I have sound from my Xbox and Blu-ray player. So I know this isn't an issue of speakers being connected wrong.

I also know the cables are good, as these are the same cables I used with my Sony Receiver. I also know that my Digital out works good and the AV cables work good, as around 1am before I re-boxed the Yamaha to return to the store, I tested them all on the old system.

I don't want to return her present, so I hope you guys can help me here. Please tell me what I am doing wrong

First off, I think THIS is a copy of your TV's owners manual. All my comments are based on that, particularly page 13.

According to this, the TV SHOULD be outputting something to your receiver, particularly with the red/white jacks. If not, I must assume one of four things:

1) The manual lies like a rug,

2) The TV is broken.

3) The receiver is broken.

4) The receiver needs some configuration to recognize the input from the TV. Check your owner's manual.

I'd liike to think it's number four but number one isn't out of the running, either. You might want to contact Insignia's customer support and talk to
Peggy.

I am focusing on #4 here, and thats my issue, I can't find that setting, after having tried everything.

I don't believe the TV is broke as it works with my older Receiver

I don't really believe that the Yamaha is broke

Talking with Peggy at Yamaha, the dude got pissed with me because everything we tried wouldn't work, so finally he just told me to take it back to the store and expect the same issues no matter what Yamaha receiver I bought.

Hi, and welcome to the forum! First, happy belated birthday. :)

From your description, here are my assumptions. The Motorola box and TV were previously set up and output digital audio to your Sony, and the only change that you have made is to swap out the Sony for the new Yamaha. Is that correct?

Did you enable the "HDMI Control" function on the receiver?

I'm still looking through your manual, but on some receivers, HDMI audio will override other settings, so we'll probably want to make sure that it's not set up to use HDMI audio anywhere.

Seriously, I have no life.

I sympathize with you, on your birthday and many happy returns!

I downloaded your TV and receiver manual.

Your TV did output analog audio before via the red and white ports, so it should now. I did note however that the TVs internal speakers have to be set to off for audio to appear at the analog outs. I assume you have the TV speakers set to off.

Your receiver is unusual in that you can not assign inputs.

You have connected your TV analog outputs correctly. The only analog inputs available on that receiver are AV5 inputs 1 and 2. So you did your home work correctly.

Have you confirmed the analog outputs of your TV are still live, by reconnecting your Sony? If not I would.

If the outputs are live and there is no sound with the way you have it connected and you have selected the connected input, then you must have a faulty receiver.

I thought that online manual was terrible, as you could hardly read it. It was poorly written and in my view that receiver is poorly thought out and configured. It is loaded with useless features and is seriously wanting in essentials. Actually I was appalled. Yamaha must be going on a slide as well.

On another matter the only coax you could be using is via the antenna connection of the TV. This is a poor way of doing things.

You need to insist that your cable company give you a device that will output HDMI with the current HDCP codes so you can connect it to your receiver.

However, you are entitled to a receiver with functioning analog inputs.

Personally I would return that receiver as defective and exchange it for one better thought out.

Modern equipment certainly causes some curve balls. I had an issue last week with a Panasonic BD player I just put in my downstairs system.

I set it up and everything seemed fine until I switched the the Direct TV DVR. It would keep switching back to the BD player. The the BD player would not switch off if the TV was on, it would keep restarting. Then I found out as soon as you turned on the TV the BD player turned on. Connections were HDMI and the TV a Sony Bravia.

After doing some reboots, I found Panasonic's Vierra Link is on by default. Since I had no other equipment with Vierra link I did not think much of it. However, when I turned off Vierra link everything worked correctly and the BD player could be off with the TV on and not bounce off the DVR from the selector.

I say it is the height of commercial arrogance and stupidity to configure a unit like that. So you certainly can get thrown some curve balls even if you have some experience in this.

Of course the manual only mentioned Vierra link in the context of other Vierra equipped Panasonic equipment. So I had to play a hunch.

This sort of stuff is just not good enough. We have constructed a Tower of Bable.
