I am going to have a pair of Polk monitor 40 fronts, cs1 center, monitor 30 rears and either a pioneer vsx 520 or 820 receiver. My room is about 17x12 with vaulted ceilings, but is in an apartment so I can't crank the bass too high. My budget is $175 shipped. My first two thoughts were the bic America f12 and v1020. Do you think I need the power of the f12 or would the v1020 be fine for my space? Is there another sub that would work? Also does front firing vs. Down firing make a difference? Use will be 80% movies, 15% gaming, 5% music. I also saw that the V1220 was a bit cheaper than the F12, is there that big a difference between the two?

I can't really comment on either but keep in mind that in an apartment anything that you buy needs to be up on an isolation pad. Something like an Auralex SubDude/Gramma/Great Gramma. They're all the same thing just different sizes for different size subwoofers. It won't let you crank the heck out of the sub without complaints but it should help at reasonable volumes by preventing vibrations form the subwoofer's cabinet from transferring into the floor.
