Help with a new sub

Hello,

My current setup consists of 2 Martin Logan Prefaces for fronts, a ML Encore TF for center, and 2 more Encore TF's for my rear speakers. I am using a Boston Acoustics CR400 subwoofer that I got years ago (75watts, 8 inch) and I am in dire need of an upgrade on the subwoofer. This thing can not really handle the volumes that I like to listen to my movies and music at.

What subwoofer would you guy's reccommend at a price around 500-600 dollars? I am open to all suggestions not just ML products (Dynamo) I have heard good things about the SVS products.

Thanks,

Ryan

You'll need to supply the size of the entire space (W x D x H).

I would say the room is around 12 x 14 x 8 give or take. I want a sub that can be used in a larger room though because this system will not always be in this room.

Hsu has a sale going on right now. You could get a VTF-2 MK3 for $553 shipped which should fill that room (and a room up to 3000 cubic feet) nicely.

If you're worried about filling up a larger space with big sound (and you're willing to augment your budget a bit), you could get a Hsu VTF-3 MK3 for $729 shipped or one of those sweet-looking new Epik Empires for $799 + shipping.

SVS always has some nice offerings as well, but to fill that kind of space will take a bit more than you're willing to spend.

That vtf-3-mk3 looks pretty nice on paper! I see you have the 2, how does that sound?

I love mine. Certainly it's far tighter and more powerful than anything I've ever heard in a B&M store and it does a great job with movies and music. You can absolutely get a better subwoofer, but there are few in the price range that get as many recommendations (excepting DIY).

That said, I certainly don't have the expertise of many of the other members here; I haven't owned several different subs or auditioned/compared the SVS/Epik/eD alternatives in my own house. However, I am a musician/band director so I like to think I've got an ear for sound.

I'm sure the other members will chime in shortly, but again, I'm mad about my VTF-2.

Thanks man! I will see what others say, but for the money that certainly does look like a great sub... especially compared to what i have currently!

Cerwin Vega (the company that put the *** in bass) offers some very affordable sub-woofers. I personally have not had the opportunity to experience them, but I do won a pair of their floor standing VS100's. And the regular 10 inch woofer in these speakers has a very nice, tight & fast bottom end. So, given cerwin vegas history in the industry, I have every reson to believe that one of their 10 or 12 inch front-firing sub ought to be pretty sweet.

Hey SOP,

How do these HSU subs compare to the SVS subs of similar price?

HSU subs tend to have a little better SQ than the comparable SVS IMO. However, the SVS will hit a hair harder. In that room, the HSU would be my pick.
