Hi all,
I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their weekends.

I would like to upgrade my home theater set from my very basic LG to some of the mid-range sets. I have few options in mind, depending on where i live.

Options are
1. Onkyo HT-S7800
2. Yamaha RX-V 685 with separate speakers.

Well, i care about having good quality surrounded sounds, that have ability to be expanded later to 7.1 If you suggest Yamaha, then what set of speakers to get to make use of the atoms and dts-x Thanks

I have the Yamaha Rx 683 other then no pre outs for the year I’ve had it, it’s been rock solid.

Shows how much "Ppl" know :) Onkyo had issues for a while with hdmi/network boards they worked thru and seem to have resolved. I had one of their avrs that had that issue and they repaired it quickly under an extended warranty program for those avrs (2009-2012 date range). Currently they seem to have no more issues than most consumer electronics (Yamaha by some reports by member MCode does apparently have the edge on reliability via an in-industry survey, though). They've even incorporated Pioneer's MCACC into their AccuEQ so even their room eq has gone up in quality (they acquired Pioneer's avr business). Whether or not they're on firm financial footing is still suspect, tho.

Of all the HTIB sets Onkyo often at least provided an actual avr and active sub so you could at least upgrade it with standard components and the HTS7800 does have these. Still, unless you just want a quick purchase, I still think you're better off with selecting your own speakers rather than go with the Onkyo packaged speaker set, don't think I'd ever buy an Onkyo speaker on it's own....altho I may not go with a Yamaha avr particularly, I'd shop around for what's the best deal for the feature set/amp section I need for the speakers and other components I want to use (like having a full set of pre-outs so you have amplification options if needed down the line).
