Help Suggesting Subwoofer

I just got a new Onkyo SR-TX605 AV Receiver, and my old subwoofer is a passive Sony, and the new receiver only supports powered subs. Unfortunately I am on a tight budget after the purchase of the new Onkyo, and I have a room that is about 12'x18' with hardwood floors. My fiance hates the boominess of the old sub, or any sub for that matter. Now I know what I am fixing to say is pretty much an oxymoronic statement... but I would like to find, a tight deep sub with little to no boominess for under $150... is there any such sub?

Thanks for the help all!

If I were you I would check craigslist. Or...live without a sub for a while until you can afford a good sub with EQ to remove any boominess.

...good luck

Ever heard of Hsu Research? Dr. Hsu is a sub guru and has a sale on the STF-1 FOR $254.00 PLUS $20.00 shipping. Taken from the Hsu website:

Industry Reviews
“Sensational sub...31.5 Hz...106dB....easily surpassed the $500 NHT SW10...as well as the $600 Velodyne CT-120...and was superior to a $500 Axiom EP-175...had no trouble eclipsing the performance of the pint-sized, $995 Sunfire True Sub Super Junior...”
— Howard Ferstler, Sensible Sound (Sept/Oct 2004)

“Hsu's STF-1 is one impressive little subwoofer. It went plenty low for true home theater action, with meaningful volume all the way down to 25 Hz — a lot more than I expected. It wasn't boomy yet had me running for cover during the scene in The Italian Job when the armored truck blows through the pavement.”
— Daniel Kumin, Sound & Vision (Oct 2004)

“The Hsu Research STF-1 is one hell of a $299 subwoofer...the STF-1's robustly deep bass power was impressive, and it was capable of dishing out low-frequency effects like a much larger subwoofer.”
— Steve Guttenberg, CNET (April 2004)

“The STF-1 is a total overachiever. It produced louder, cleaner, deeper bass than something this small and inexpensive has any right to.”
— Jeff Van Dyne, Home Theater Sound (July 2004)

I have the Hsu "Big Dawg" VTF-3 HO Turbo, and it's an excellent sub. I think its on a mission to tear my foundation apart :)

Good Luck, and may the bass be with you!

If you can stretch, I'd look at the HSU STF-1 ($254) first, the Onix x-sub ($199) second, and as a last resort, Dayton sub (~$105) third.

The HSU STF-1 and Dayton are good budget subwoofers. I would recommend holding off a little and saving up for a better subwoofer from HSU or SVS. If you can't wait, another decent budget subwoofer is the Bic Acoustech H-100.

thanks guys, those subs look great, especially the Hsu, I may try to grab that one, but I was looking at the rest of their site, how are the Ventriloquist speakers? Are there any others anyone would recommend in their price range?

well around 250 for the sub, and dont really have a budget set for speakers, wasnt planning on buying any new ones so soon, but 6 pieces for 300 seemed like a steal.

Yes, but they are also relatively small and won't fill larger rooms, so that is a consideration. For the price I am sure they are fine. If you do a search in the louspeakers forum, there is a private user review of them.
