HELP: Subwoofer Positioning

Friends,

Had a quick question - where do you think the subwoofer should go?

The installer said 2 options would be good -

1) Place it in the front, on the right/eft hand side corner
2) Place it at the back below the right/left wall-mounted speaker

FYI it's a 5.1 system.

Thoughts?

I have tried putting my sub at the back of my listening room and it just didnt sound right there. I could tell the bass was coming from behind me. I like it much more in the front corner of the room.

I'm having the same trouble. The manual says (helpfully!!) "experiment". Is there a general rule of thumb? For example, do they sound better in a corner, an open space, away from other furniture or what? I know it's matter of suck-it-and-see, but to be honest, by the time I'm at position 3, I've forgotten what it sounded like in position 1 and always have a nagging feeling it was better somewhere else!! It's got the woofer at the front.

it really depends on many factors. what kind of sub is it? is there a port and if there is, where is it located on the box? it also depends on where you are sitting in relation to the sub. these are just a few... this is a fairly interesting read:

Crawling for Bass - Subwoofer Placement

there are also some more technical articles in the "how to" section of the main website if you are interested. good luck!

Thanks

You guys are awesome!! Let me get it installed and I'll play around a bit and keep you posted.

Its a subwoofer that came with the Infinity Modulus II system. Not sure what the type is. How do I find out (?)..

I got my Receiver today and it tell me that the best position is the from, away from the front floor stands, face facing the center between the viewe and the center channel...Will try this one first!

congrats on a very nice system. make sure that if the port is on the back, that you give the sub enough breathing room to operate correctly. so, don't place it directly up against the wall if that is the case.
