hi there. this is my first post. i’m putting together a fairly basic home theater system and have picked out most components, but i’m having trouble settling on a receiver. i’d like to stay in the $500 range. i’m hoping you can help me out.

so far, i’ve settled on the following components: (1) TV: panasonic plasma G10 series, probably 50”, but perhaps 54”, (2) blue ray DVD player: PS3 slim, and (3) speakers: energy 5.1 micro surround system.

in addition, i would like to connect (1) my old turntable, (2) my old universal/region-free DVD player (for the few Pal DVD’s i have because i understand the PS3 cannot be made region-free) (3) an ipod, and (4) my old VCR (though i can sacrifice this if necessary). finally, i’ll probably be getting a Wii somewhere down the road (my kids have been clamoring for one).

as for the receiver, i’ve been looking at the pioneer VSX-1019-AH-K and the denon AVR-1910. neither has a phono input, but they seem to have a lot going for them. considering my needs, which of these two would you recommend? is there something else you would recommend? (i’d love to find a good receiver with a phono input. if i don’t get one, i understand i could use an adapter/amplifier. is this a good solution?))

thanks in advance for your help.

I believe the 1019 at a retail store is anywhere between 450 and 500. BestBuy price matched me yesterday on an Elite 21TXH (was 599 but they brought it down to 499). The Elite is definitely a better buy than the 1019 for that price.

thanks deeselcyde. i recently started considering the 21 as well since the price differential is not significant. i returned a little while ago from best buy and saw it on sale for $599. i figured i could try to negotiate it down. seeing your post makes me optimistic. (any place in particular that i can cite for a price match?)

Just talk to a Salesman for a while, ask him a few questions between the 21 and another mid-range receiver, make him think that you are interested, then ask him if he'll price match it. Say you would never pay that price for the receiver. If he asks, have the page printed out and show him, see what he can pull.

Tell him that we are in a recession and it will help their 1st quarter numbers :D

The Denon 1910 has my vote. Good amp section and Audyssey MultEQ. If you go with Pioneer, go with an Elite as desselcyde suggests. The 1019 was benched and it tested at 29wpc into 5 channels; probably worst into 7.
