Help selecting a 5.1 speaker system for an audiophile who is out of date

Hello, this is my first time posting on this form. I have been using the same 2.1 Altec Lancing computer speaker system for the past 15+ years. As of now, I would like to replace the system with a suitable 5.1 speaker system. I have two main issues with this task. The first is that the speaker market is presently dominated by brands that I am not familiar with: JBL, Harmon, Klipsch, Onkyo, while brands that I am familiar with (Altec Lancing, Yamaha, Sony) seem to have moved out of the computer speaker business. Bose (although quite good) is incredibly overpriced for its quality. To add further complications to the matter, I have yet to find a speaker system in stores that matches the quality of my old Altec Lancing 2.1 system. This rules out mostly all Logitech speakers (even their 5.1 systems). I would greatly appreciate a recommendation of a high-quality 5.1 speaker system, preferably under $500. Thanks.

Is it for the computer or for use with a tv?

If its for a computer you might be better off keeping the 2.1 system if sound quality is the goal.

I have a pair of the JBL LSR305s, very nice for the price, altho I don't use computer speakers except what my laptop has, but would work nice nonetheless (and they have a few other active speakers in that lineup that are larger that get get reports, too). Harman Intl owns JBL and Samsung currently owns Harman. You never heard of JBL before but heard of Altec? Both have origins in the movie theater biz, tho. Store demos may not tell you a lot, either. Not going to get great 5.1 set for under $500 unless used, tho. That Logitech system HTfreak mentions gets generally quite good reports for the price, tho. This just for use at a desk or?

Great to hear. And for 260.00 that’s awesome
