I have a pair of old sony speakers that go into an old sony stereo system. the speakers have 2 basic copper wires coming out of them and they go into the stereo either in the Right +/- or the Left +/-. i want to be able to have these speakers (or at least one of them) to come out of a standard headphone jack. what do i need to do?

...it's source (radio/records/tapes/CDs) to amplifier (receiver/tuner-pre-amp-amplifier) to speakers...

Generally speaking, a headphone jack does not have sufficient output to drive a loudspeaker...an additional source of amplification is required...

jimHJJ(...check this site and others like it for a further explanation of audio basics...or do a Google on specific subjects...)

Also.....

What about connections? If it was to come out of some sort of amplification device, what would i need to do to change the 2 standard copper cables into, say, a 6.3mm jack thingy????

That depends on the amp, but I believe you answered this yourself in your first post.

"... the speakers have 2 basic copper wires coming out of them and they go into the stereo either in the Right +/- or the Left +/-."

But......

Can they be converted into a 6.3mm cable end thing????
If replying with the answer "Yes", please say how to save me asking!!!!!
cheers

...yes, but it depends...given the possible options, YOU will have to try to be a bit more specific as to your intentions...

I have to answer your question with another.

Why? You should be able to simply plug the bare wires into the amp. Why would you want to convert it to a "6.3mm cable end thing", whatever that is.

Well.....

Im a pro with a soldering iron!!
In one of the previous replies, it said about it coming from a source then goin into an amp or reciever and then it said tuner also. so for it to come out of a tuner, doesnt it have to have a 6.3mm cable end???
I really dont know what im talking about, thats why im on the beginners forum section!
Also, if it were to come out of a mixer?? my m8s mixer has got speaker outputs that are for 6.3mm standard leads.

Seriously, I'm not too sure you're not a troll.

Either that, or you don't bother to read and comprehend the answers you've been offered. In either case, I'll leave any further answers to others before my normally helpful, jovial attitude turns sour.

Sorry....

Ok im sorry to anyone who has been reading my posts and been getting annoyed. I dont know much about this sorta stuff so im on this site trying to get some help. Basically, ive got a speaker that has 2 basic copper wires coming out of it. I want to be able to use it out of a mixer, but the mixer only has outputs that fit basic guitar or w.e leads.
What can i do??
What else could i run the speakers out of??

One last try, just in case...

simply put, you can't. Mixers can't drive speakers. ...never did ...never will ... They're not made to.

You need a power amplifier. No way around it. ...simple as that.

Sorry, I just find it unusual that one can claim to be a pro with a soldering iron and yet be so lacking in the basic concepts.

markw, over and out...

...Is it a powered mixer? If it is powered, simply get yourself some 1/4" phone plugs (I used to use Switchcraft mil-spec PJ-047Bs for guitar cords and pedal jumpers) and solder away...hot/+ to the tip and ground/- to the ring.

If not you will have to feed it's output to an outboard amplifier...then there's the problem of the amp's inputs...Will they be RCA-type, phone, or XLR-type connectors...

jimHJJ(...nothing is as simple as we'd like it to be...)

You can pick up 1/4" to RCA adapters at Parts Express .com for around $4 - no soldering needed.
