Help Re: Toshiba HD-DVD A1 and Analog hookup

I'm using the 6 analog outs from my Toshiba HD-A1 to my Yamaha RX-V550 so I can take advantage of TrueHD (in it's modifed form 2.0 firmware upgrade). The problem is that I'm getting no response or little response from my subwoofer. I know my Yamaha is not giving me bass control because of the analog hookup but how can I boost and control the bass and subwoofer response. In all other respects the sound is a noticeable improvement and richness then using the optical downconverted to DTS connection on the HD-A1. Of course the RX-V550 does not have HDMI inputs so I have to use the analog route.

Help would be much appreciated.

Does perhaps either the player have a gross subwoofer output adjustment or boost, or the receiver have an external input subwoofer level adjustment?

For example, the player may have a +10dB subwoofer out boost adjustment. Or the receiver may have an external input subwoofer adjustment in 5 or 10dB increments.

If not, you're left with only the player's individual speaker level trims and the receiver's individual external input level trims to make the adjustments.

Also, to what size are your speakers set in the player?

The subwoofer itself has a separate volume and gain control. As well the HD-A1 has separate (in the setup option) controls for the 5.1 setup in terms of "distance" and db. So for example the subwoofer has the "distance" and db levels. The db I leave at 0 which should give me the volume if I properly adjust the speaker volume itself and gain (it doesn't seem to do much of anything). The distance I've put to 12 feet simply because I'm approximately 12 ft away. The other speakers I've left at 0 and 0 distance as well.

To be frank I'd like to know the effect of changing these variables on the HD-A1. Since using the analog outputs on the HD-A1 results in outputting a DD+ mix it is much richer than the optical which the HD-A1 converts to a DTS mix. It's nice but doesn't approach the richness of the analog outs. However, I'm ignorant as to the effect of the settings in the HD-A1 and the impact for the purposes of the analog process (of course using the optical is a no brainer since the receiver does the processing and bass management).
