HELP!! question about Axiom QS8

I have the opportunity to buy the Axiom surround QS8 for 400$. these say they allow 400Watts max. Will my reciever be enough to power them without hooking them up to a separate amp. I am running Sony DE 875 110x5. Also does matching matter when buying surrounds meaning do they have to match mains and center??

Yes your receiver will be fine. Your surrounds don't have to match but it can be nice.

Speaker matching

Axiom makes good speakers and the M22's and VP100 or VP150 would work great with your QS8's. It is pretty critical that the front and center channels be a good tonal match and less critical but desirable that the surrounds match. Sign up for this months contest. If you can't afford the matching speakers, you should consider upgrading the mains first and adding the surrounds later down the road.

under most conditions, any speaker will only be drawing a few watts (like around 1 or 2).

I'll reiterate what jcPanny noted regarding having your front soundstage be a solid timbre match (mains and center) for seamless panning, however your surrounds as well as rear surrounds (if applicable) don't necessarily need to match your front soundstage.

In fact, I have an all BA front (VR3 mains and VR12 center) along with Axiom QS8s and M3s for surrounds and rear surrounds respectively. The QS8s do a phenomenal job with movie soundtracks and mesh very well with my front soundstage for MC (mulitchannel) audio (SACD, DVD-A, etc.). Even in 7.1 Pro Logic IIx Music, the Axioms match up with with the Boston Acoustics... -TD

QS8 crossover

i am running the qs8s as surrounds powered by yamaha htr 5960, the yamaha only alows you to set one main crossover and not a crossover for every speaker. i was looking through the qs8 manual and the frequecy settings say 1. response +/- 3db 95Hz-22Khz 2. Response + 3db/ -9db
65hz-22khz. What does that mean and which one should i use to set the crossover. I thought i would set the crossover to 80hz and go by (number 2 65Hz). any thoughts?

a quick second question, i am running 2 subs and using the crossover on the receiver, what do i do with the built in crossovers on the subs, 1 sub has an option to turn off the crossover which i did, and the second sub crossover cannot be disabled, should i turn the crossover to its highest setting of 160hz???

The first spec means that from 95 Hz to 22 kHz the output from the speaker varies from the input by no more than +3 dB higher than the input or -3 dB lower than the input. This is the standard measurement that all speakers quote.

The second means that over the range from 65 Hz to 22 kHz the response varies by no more than +3 dB higher than the input or -9 dB lower than the input.

What it does not tell you is at which frequencies the output will be higher or lower than the input, although it is likely that -9 dB is in the lower frequencies.

80 Hz will be fine as the xover.

Yes, turn the sub xover dial as high as it will go since you are using the xover in the receiver.
