Help programming Uni. Remote!

Hey guys,

I need serious help programming my Universal Remote. Its a Kameleon 6 in 1, it was given to me as a gift (even though my Yamaha remote is ALSO universal *shakes head*).

Anywho, I have been doing everything in the manual to get this stupid thing working, but it will not influence my equipment. Receiver: nadda, DVD player: nadda. I haven't tried my TV yet, but I bet I can predict the outcome.

I would post a link for the remote, but they don't have it on the website... This can't be right. The model # is URC-6962. Teh closest thing to it is the 6960, but it has a different display.

I wish I had the Logitech 880, but its $300.

So, does anyone out there no the secret to this thing? Anyone have any hints or tips? Come on, I have helped all of you, time to return the favor.

Does it have a learn function? I would assume that's the best way to set it up for your receiver. Learning can be a bit tedious, but it's worth it in the end.

It does, but its a PAIN. I want to exhaust all my other options before I head down that road. Plus, I think this one can only learn certain keys. I am not going to input every key into this stupid thing.

The Kameleon is just like the other URC-xxx remotes sold under the One-For-All brand. If that is the version sold by Radio Shack it is still made by URC and is programmed in the same way as the other models.

So...what exactly is your problem? 'It doesn't work' doesn't give me much to go on.

That type of remote has very limited memory for learned commands (2-3K). It is best to use the pre-programmed setup codes, but as with all such remotes, just because a code is listed it doesn't necessarily mean that it will actually work for your device. On the URC remotes, all of the setup codes for a particular device type are stored under the device mode selector; ie if you are programming the 'dvd' button, you can only use the setup codes in the dvd table. A common mistake is to select the dvd button but then hit another device button when you are supposed to enter the 3 or 4 digit setup code.

Note that if that remote has a JP1 connector (under the battery cover) you can eliminate most all of the limitations of the remote if you are willing to download the jp1 tools and do a little programming. The tools do all of the work so it isn't really that involved.

The best alternative would be to spend $125 on a HTM MX-350 and leave all your troubles behind.

I would drop $300 for the 880, but this is a gift, and I want to try to get it working.

Basically, I followed the instructions and used the codes in the manual, but to no avail. DVD player, Receiver, nothing worked.

I read a review on the Kameleon 8 in 1 and heard about the JP1 connector. I have 6 dots together (in the shape of a size pack of beer {above view}) but I don't know how to get that hooked up to my rig, with out excessive force.
