Help please choosing loudspeakers

Hello,

I'm posting this message from Brazil where there are limited options when buying speakers and prices are generally highly inflated.

My budget for a pair of speakers is R$8000 (8k reais or Brazilian real). In that range I've found the following units and only the first of which I had the opportunity to listen to:

B&W CM7 (8k)
Tannoy Autograph Mini (8k)
Tannoy Precision 6.2 (8k)

I listen to old Brazilian popular music on LPs, jazz, classical and eletroacoustic music. I don't usually listen to music at high volumes. My listening space will be a large room with wooden floors and ceiling.

I've always loved the sound of the Tannoys I've heard. Given that the Autograph mini will lack a bit of bottom-end when compared to the B&W and Precision listed above - can anyone offer an opinion as to whether or not the Autograph Mini has more to offer? Is the extra price just for the cabinetry? In the future I may add a self-powered sub - although I won't spend a lot of money on it.

I'm also looking at an amp. The best value quality stereo amp I can find is Harman Kardon HK990 (R$4649). It has 150 watts per channel, but with sensible use, there shouldn't be any problem using with the Minis, should there? (the minis have a recommended amp size of 20 - 100 watts)

Hope you can help! Thanks.

I hear few Tannoy speakers and I did like the sound, but not these models. What else brands you have locally or which one you could order online?

I don't know local prices but I will tell you this - one could build much better 2.1 (bookshelves + sub) system instead of trying to get great bass out of pair of towers
I would go back and listen to bookshelves - disregard the bass portion for now. Then get a nice receiver like Denon X1000 and a sealed sub

Not spending enough money on sub is not smart idea, good sub properly integrated will do wonders for the overall sound

I think a lot of the money is wasted on nicer cabinets and slightly more bass extension, which doesn't even compete with subs ported or sealed.

So I would use the money saved on a nicer AVR and a good sub, ported or sealed.

Many thanks for the reply. Buying online from overseas is a bit complicated because of duties and delays. In this city, the best speakers available for listening are the B&Ws. I listed the CM7s because there is a pair on sale at the moment (CM7 is discontinued). The CM5 bookshelf is over my budget. One local online trader has a largish range. If you go to this site:

AUDIO VIDEO & COMPANHIA

and click on "CAIXAS ACUSTICAS" on the left menu, a drop-down list of brands appears including: Jamo, monitor audio, tannoy .

What Tannoy bookshelf speakers do you like? Any suggestions on sealed subs?

Wow, the prices are really steep. I compared this 5.1 - https://www.audiovideoecompanhia.com.br/produto.php?cod_produto=5350756&sci=5350756
it cost less than half here. few more items - the cost continues to be double https://www.audiovideoecompanhia.com.br/produto.php?cod_produto=5350565
R$990 = $408 vs $200 on amazon.com
pretty much the story goes same for the rest of items

Well, anyhow this pair of speakers should be great together : https://www.audiovideoecompanhia.com.br/produto.php?cod_produto=5350807&sci=5350807

and this receiver: https://www.audiovideoecompanhia.com.br/produto.php?cod_produto=5357783

Of the options you listed I'd easily go with the CM7's however I am not a fan of the B&W CM series. Within your budget and limited availability I like the suggestions for smaller speakers and subwoofer. I think you are on target with the HK990 which is a nice piece.

So your total budget is about 13,000.

Speakers: PSB Image B6 @ 3,037 per pair
Subs: Velodyne Impact 12 @ 2,490 each x 2 = 4,980
AVR: Denon X4000 for 4,490
Total = 12,507

This comes out to be about 8K for speakers + subs and 4.5K for amps.

Plus some for the speaker stands. :D
