Help picking stereo receiver.

Due to WAF issues, I can not get an AV receiver (she wont let me run wires around the fireplace), for tv use.
So, I need to get just a stereo receiver to run home audio for 4 rooms (8 speakers).
Can someone recommend some models to look at?
Hoping to spend under $300-350 on the receiver.
Also, would I then just need a 8 channel amp? Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Hi Mark,
I did just go thru it and it was a big help, but then my wife switched plans on me. Before, I was looking for an av receiver, but now since no video will be used, I need just a stereo receiver.
Thinking about the onkyo TX 8511, but know very little about stereo only receivers.
Also, now that my setup changed, I am wondering if my requirements for an amp changed as well.
Sorry to be a pest, but I try to help out in other areas that I know better, ie front projection systems.
I just like to get a lot of info before I do anything as I have screwed up too many projects in the past.

Are you saying you want to use a multi channel amp setup..

...as opposed to simply using an impedance matching speaker selector switch?

If you are going with stereo, be certain to get a reciever with direct bypass loops from the pre-amp to amplifiers on the back of the unit(these do still exist), or just use seperate components as opposed to a reciever. This will allow for maximum flexibility in the future if you need to an an equalization system, electronic crossovers or other such line level devices.

I think you guys sometimes forget how much knowledge you have. (thats a compliment by the way)
Forgive my ignorance, but most of what you said went over my head.

I have wiring done for 8 speakers, (4 rooms)
I just want to play music in all 4 rooms. Most of it will just be background music, ie dining room.
I will be using AM/FM radio and cd's only.
I want an easy and economical way to do this myself.

I really dont know if I need a speaker selector, or I need an amp, etc.
I have never used either before.

I apologize for asking such a basic question, but if you guys could dumb it down for me, that would help.(ie, what specific pieces do I need)
I would just hire someone to do it all, but finances dont allow it.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

Perhaps you should re-read your previous thread I linked to above.

It's either what I outlined there, in a fair amount of detail, or more amps, more complexity and more money. ...your choice.

Enjoy an merry Christmas to you, too.

mark,
"It's either what I outlined there, in a fair amount of detail"

Are you kidding?

It should be obvious that I dont understand.
A better way to put it would have been, you need "A" hooked to "B", then "C".
I still dont know if I just need a receiver (which kind) and just a speaker selector box, or if I still would need an external amp to run 8 speakers.

If you really thought you gave me the advice I needed, then I must be fairly dense, and I apologize.
If you are being a smart a**, then I think you should change the reason under to your posts for why your wife left you.

No, I'm not being a smart ***. I guess that just leaves the other option

It's almost like you're fishing for an answer that you want, not the answer that is.

OK then, just hook all the speakers up to the two speaker terminals. Turn it on. Enjoy it. Invite some friends and have them bring marshmallows and some sticks to toast on your receiver while it's still working.

To put it in a simple English as possible, yes, you DO need that switchbox I mentioned in the second post of your last thread.

If you didn't understand the explanation I gave you in my first post in that thread, then perhaps this project is beyond you. Maybe you should seek professional help. While you're at it you might look for one that does audio installs as well.

Enjoy a marshmallow for me. S'mores are nice this time of year.

Mark,
why do you post here?
Is there a contest to see who can post the most?
Because it certainly isnt to help someone.

I didnt doubt needing a switchbox, I was also trying to figure out if I needed an amp IN ADDITION. Also looking for SPECIFIC devices to look at.

Your smart a** degrading attitude has convinced me to see my answers on other forums. I am also sure it is why your wife left you. Who could blame her?

P.S. when you are done reading this..... go f--k yourself

Why do I post here? To help people that want help.

You either don't, won't or can't accept an answer when it's given. You've been given the answers over and over but still you either don't, won't or can't understand what's being said. What we have here is a failure to communicate and, considering that I've been fairly successful in answering many more difficult questions, albeit from not as difficult a petitioner, I tend to believe I know where the fault lies.

I'm truly sorry you didn't get the satisfaction you feel you deserve but I can sleep soundly at night knowing I did my best trying to provide you with a good answer which, after more than 40 years in audio both professionally and as a hobby, is pretty good.

One question though. In post 11 of your initial thread you state that you already have the Yamaha 5890 and love it playing in 7 channels. Now, here you're saying "she who must be obeyed" won't let you buy a HT receiver? That's somewhat of an incongruity* between what you say here and in your previous thread. ...and you talk about my marital issues, eh?

I think I know what the "df " stands for.

*a polite way of saying at least one of those statements is a lie. So, who is zoomin' who here?
