Help On sub purchase

Hi All, Im also new here. My system is almost complete. Last thing I need is a subwoofer. My system goes like this

Harmon Kardon AVR7400
Fronts Infinity Overture 3's
Rears Infinity IL 60's

When I put this system together i didn't think that I would need a subwoofer, but the Overtures wont handle high volume, the bass starts to distort. So I set the Fronts to "SMALL" and now I can get a realy high volume but I lose the bass.

So Im now in the market for a sub. Im not sure what brand or model, but I would like to stay under $1000.00. have read a review here on the Velodyne SPL-1200 Series II, and it sounds good. Has anyone used this model? I listen to music alot more then movies. So Im looking for the sub to hit hard rather then just rumble.

Any suggestions would GREATLY be appreciated!

What you need is a musical sub with excellent damping control you may not get in ported enclosure designs. Though the Velodyne can be musical inspite of its ported design. Do audition the REL subs as well as the B&W ASW 600 subs which are of sealed enclosure diesign.

the velodyne is sealed, and it is a very musical subwoofer capable of producing loud clean tight bass. no matter what your room size is, the velodyne is never a bad choice.

My Velo CT-120 is ported. I tried plugging the port, it sounded ok. Should I not do that, though?

Some velodyne users raise the sub a few inches off the floor to tame some perceived boominess. Plugging the port can also help. If it sounds better for you, why not?

I recently got a Velodyne SPL1000. Sealed enclosure and video shielded to boot. I really like it, I posted about it here
