Help on receiver choice

Hi, I am a NEWBIE for building a HT system. I have a small room and currently own a pair of speaker that built by myself. I am looking for a receiver to drive it. I also want to have the ability to expand later on to at least a 5.1 or 7.1 system.

I am looking at HK AVR series(I am thinking of 335 ~ 635), Pioneer 1015 or anything that will cost me around $400, less is better.

I read many posts here, but I still do not have an idea on any single one of the receiver. I need some help. Could anyone make some suggestions?

One other thing, I have a confusion here. Power rating does not equal to sound quality, and of course the quality of sound largely depends on the speaker. Why people wants a higher power rating receiver while it might only get the speaker louder, but not quality wise? Can anyone suggest good sound quality (no need for loudness) receiver around $400 or less?

Thank you

I don't think a lot of people will be able to guide you thru this process. But the first think you'll have to do is to get out of your house and go shopping. Stay hours in audio shops listening to the greatest amount of brands/receivers possible. Then you'll be able to choose at least what company/sound you like. As you might already know, sound is really subjective and no one can guarantee you that this receiver in peticular will sound great in your ears. Take Denon for example. Really respected on this site. But I don't like them...

You see... it's all a matter of tastes

Happpy shopping! :p

I see, thank you.

I guess I will have to spend some time listening to them.

Receiver options

Yamaha, Denon, HK, Pioneer, and Marantz all make some good receivers in your price range. Pick one with a good price and the power and features you need.

You should be able to find the Yamaha HTR-5860 for about $300 from authorized online dealers. You also might be able to get a refurbished Yamaha RX-V1500 or 2500 from ubid in the $400 range.

Speakers, however, are another story and are worth auditioning. If fact, you should decide on your speaker system and budget first and then chose a receiver that is capable of driving them.

.....JCPanny, your posts and suggestions are solid as Sears....to not search for speakers that thrill you "live hearing", usually brings upgraditis far too soon....a rule of my searching would be "a couple of price-levels above as per enjoyment, at "relatively" the same cost".......one poster in another speaker-thread, said even though the model higher thrilled him more, he would settle for a deal he can't pass up on lower models from the same line, for his main's regiment speakers....BuddySir, I'd have to be thrilled just as well, especially if the higher model's would have meant only an extra two or three months to get....be patient....find, then work toward, or, bottom-slam an offer of cash by transfer, seems to open doors, haha.....JCPanny, I've noticed you answer questions when others don't reply, and I've found you to be a good and valuable man....everyone, there are no golden ears here at this site....the ears of newbies are governed by "does it sound more live?", just like the oldest member here, get used to it....as has been said before, if you buy main's regiment speakers that are fairly costly without hearing them first, ""and comparing"" them with others by "live hearing" tests before purchase, ya' belong in the drooling academy.....
