help on kitchen audio

I'm new here and need some simple recommendations. My family and I spend much time in the kitchen/dining area, and we need some decent audio, but on a budget ($500 max, ideally sig. less). It seems to me I have a couple choices: either a quality tabletop radio/cd (yes, we need cd player too) such as BA or Cambridge, or a component system, tuner, receiver, CD player, bookshelf speakers.

I tend toward the latter, b/c besides music we listen to great deal of NPR radio, but are in a rural valley and need something with very good FM reception (and our satellite internet isn't good enough for consistent streaming, plus other uses). Also, if I do components I'd like to possibly get a second set of bookshelf speakers for the living room "next door" (both rooms fairly small, 250sqft ish). Obviously the speakers won't be anything special in our price range, but I prefer not too tinny and *especially* no overdone bass.

BTW, we're not big tv folks, so no need for "home theater" systems.

Sorry for length - recommendations?

I just finished my "kitchen" system a few weeks ago as I also spend a lot of time there.
I've got Onix Ref 1 speakers set up as a zone on my Receiver that's in another room. I listen to NPR, XM,& CD's so this set up saves me duplicate equipment.
It sounds fantastic. It's hard to cook when your always dancing around the kitchen but it sure is more fun! :D
I'm also going to try out hooking it up to a Gizmo amp and my laptop.
