Help on amplifier

Hi All,

I have 4700h in my demo. Now i an planning to add an amplifier and make it 11.2.

Q1. Should we add amplifier to towers or surrounds, which one will create more authentic home theatre experience?

Q2. I thought of adding crown xls2002 amp to power up rest of the 2 channels. Few people told me this amp wil not create good sound stage for 2channel listening, few said it will give good power to speakers to create good HT experience,
Please let me know if i can go ahead with crown xls2002 to enhance HT experience as well as 2 channel listening....

If you don't have a problem with the 4700 delivering enough power, then an amp isn't going to change the sound quality of the system. A 2002 at 375@ 8 Ohms is probably extreme overkill for most systems, certainly for adding height channels, probably even for most mains. Unless you have some really crazy low impedance speakers, that's watts you'll never benefit from.

If you can reassign the amps for the main channels to something else, I would put the amp on the main pair and reassign amps to height channels. If not, then a 1002 or similar would be more than sufficient.

Soundstage is a function of the recording itself with your speakers....not the amp. I use several Crown XLS amps myself, they work just fine. The 1502/2002/2502 have slightly better SNR specs than the 1002 fwiw. I'd generally put the power amp on the L.R/C speakers and let the avr handle the surrounds.

That doesn't seem to say the front amp channels can be reassigned for some other use, only that they can be assigned to preouts. If it were for the surrounds only, the 1002 I'd say would be fine. For mains, I would go with 1502 or similar.

I'm in a similar boat right now. 11.1 processor but not enough amp channels to add the rear heights. Going to a 9ch amp is going to get expensive I don't really have room for a second amp currently, so I'd have to replace my current one.

When using an 11.1 setup, selecting Front Pre Out instead of Height 2 means an empty set of speaker terminals will be for the Fronts instead of the Height 2 speakers. Nine channels will still be powered by the Denon and the external amp will power the Fronts using the Front Pre Out instead of powering the Height 2 speakers. I don't think any receiver allows for reassigning the core five speakers and only Back Surround and Height Speaker terminals can be reassigned for other Zones. The Pre Out for 11.1 is assignable because you would want an external amp to carry the load of the Fronts rather than the Heights if going for an 11.1 setup.

This correct. My 6012 is set up this way. I use a 2ch amp for my mains, and the Marantz powers the rest. Setup was very straightforward. But I can’t remember off hand how to do it. Lmao.
