Help on a single play SACD player

I noticed someone on my Craigslist was selling one of those Sony 400 DVD/SACD libraries however I don't much see the point in having a single play if I have a library like that and I couldn't quite imagine getting rid of the Technics as I've grown to love it. Can anyone recommend a single play SACD player that isn't a DVD player? I know they make some but to be honest, it just wouldn't look right with the rest of my system (Plus they're not very high featured).

The one exception though, I don't want those high priced $500-used players. I'm shooting way lower, like $100. Invariably it seems this might mean only a DVD player and if so is the case, do they make any SACD DVD players that are black? The silver part is what would really look out of place since everything I have is black face. I know this is silly and I don't quite know why either but I prefer it to be big and beefy, not those slim skinny ones.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: After some consideration, it might not be that bad to have the library - although this particular one is the only one I would consider. The model that is local to me is a Sony DVP-CX995v for $150 which from what I'm seeing is a great deal but still more than I'd care to spend. Here's the link I found on it at Crutchfield which makes $150 look dirt cheap:

Dakmart is selling brand-new Sony DVD players that do SACD for $49, but they're silver :( Another option is a used Oppo which are black.

Sure, I'd consider a used Oppo. What do they run? I thought their stuff was somewhat pricey.

I've seen a Denon 1920 go for $75 on eBay and a 1930 went for $150.
I have the 1920 and it cost ~$350 new @ BB.
I'm still in love with it. :)

I see a couple 1920s (No 1930s) on eBay with buy it now prices at $90 which is probably fair but I just saw one that was previously sold at $60 so I'll maybe see about shooting these guys an offer or something. Definately a sharp looking unit. Thanks for the suggestions. Still open to any others if anyone has any they could particularly recommend.

Consider a used or closeout Onkyo DV-SP502. Most came in black. I bought mine last year for $80 on closeout, it was a $299 player new. Shouldn't be too hard to get a clean used one for that or less. So far it's been a good solid player, no glitches or hiccups at all. I'm happy with mine, it plays every disc I feed it. No HDMI, just analog outs for DVD-A and SACD multichannel. It has a metal chassis and aluminum front panel, too, nice touch at this price.

That's a nice clean looking piece for sure. Even though the green display doesn't go with the blueish colored displays my NAD and Technics equipment have I still like it. HDMI is nice but not necessary, my TV has it but with a max HD res of 720p component is fine enough for me. Where would I find one that is used or a closeout? A search under the shopping segment of Google only turned up a few places (One was sold out, several others were incorrect links, and the last one was $280!). I checked out eBay and there's only one for $75 which while a good deal since it comes with several AR cables, it's that damn silver face one which has me back in the first situation again.

While my Pioneer turntable is somewhat out of place with the all black equipment, it is two-tone and doesn't stand out badly like something silver faced would. I used to have a Luxman L-480 amp with my setup and man, it was beautiful on it's own but looked tacky with everything else I had. Now if I got rid of everything but the Luxman and the Pioneer turntable, then it would be period appropriate and look great but I'm more of a modern equipment kinda guy ('80+). I wish these audio equipment makers would pick a face color and stick with it. Glossy black, silver, all black, half glossy black/half silver - it's all ridiculous! I don't even know between silver and black which is predominant anymore!

You should be able to get a 980 direct from Oppo refurb for $129 if they have any. I'd give them a call. Black is still the predominant color.

The Oppo is a good choice. Pioneer also sells a player for around $100 if you want DVD-A playback and don't need multichannel analogs. It's the DV-48AV. However, it will only do 2 channel DSD over HDMI. If you have a receiver like the Onkyo TX-SR805 and want to do direct DSD over HDMI, the Pioneer may not be the best choice.

I like the Oppo but that's a bit over my spending limit. All I plan to do is have stereo with this setup, so surround functionality is totally secondary. That looks very nice though, I didn't know anything Pioneer Elite was that cheap. Certainly an option I will consider, although I'm still bargain shopping for anything under $100 (especially since that Pioneer is not in stock atm).

Okay guys, how good is the Sony DVP-CX995v? I can get one of these for $100 which seems so good I can't pass up. Going for much more on eBay. Previously someone in my area was selling one for $150 and now this (which looks like another different ad).

A coworker of mine has that changer unit and likes it. He's no audiohpile and owns no SACD's because he hates Sony. (Yeah, I know.) However, I don't consider $100 a bad deal at all considering Fry's is still selling that unit for $249 on sale. (MSRP still $400!)

Since you are after SACD, then I would say it is worth your time and money to spend a little more and get a proven player. I had the 980 and I felt it was a good player for the price. I am not a big Pioneer fan when it comes to players of any kind besides laser disc.

I have a 222ES SACD player that is a carousel and I have been pleased with it since I got it about 4-5 years ago and it is now doing 2ch only duty in my bedroom.

Will this be for 2.1 or 2.0? Bass management could be a factor if you are looking to have a sub in the mix.

2.1, I will have the Energy sub hooked up at some point down the road. Won't be a problem for the music but it is important for the movies. What would it do to hamper the bass? I have it set to pick up where my speakers drop off so it's not overpowering bass or anything.

It affects how you will hook up and configure the player. With SACD, you want to feed a to an input that is typically not processed, and do the bass management in the player when a sub is involved. If you feed a full range signal to the receiver and have the receiver process it (for bass management) then you are to some extent "coloring" the sound, as it gets reprocessed. IMO, it still represents a superior sound than the typical CD though (dependent on the exact mix/master). If you were to listen in full range only, there is no issue, as you would be bypassing any reprocessing. That is why I mention it, as well as the fact that some players have inferior bass management. The best bass management I have seen for DVD-A/SACD is on the Denon players.

Ah, well thanks for the advice on the Sony. Turns out the fool doesn't have the manual or remote (I'd overlook the manual but not the remote). Guess there's always a catch to a low price...oh well, back to the models suggested here!
