hi,
i bought a yamaha RX-V740 to connect to my panasonic PTAE300E projecter via component cable.
i connected it all up and i got no picture.. i later realized that the amp hadn't got video up conversion.
so now i have connect a device (eg.. dvd player) via component to see the picture.. rather than connecting it via s-video.
this creates a big problem...
i have my video player and my sky and my dvd player connected to the amp via s-video...
but i cant not use the
component cable because its built into the wall (like behind the plasterboard) so we wouldnt see any cables going from the projecter (on the ceiling) to the amp...
now.. i was wondering whether there is an adapter that would convert component to s-video...(so s-video would be going into the amp but i still wouldnt see any cables)
i was searching aroun on the net and found this thing
click here but it shows that it is for the Infocus x1 projector
would this work in my situation?
or is there another adapter that'll do the job?

any help would be appreciated,
thanx -anderson- :)

I'm not sure I got this right from your post, but you want to down-convert your DVD player from component to S- ???, use the Yamaha to switch S- sources, and then run S- to your projector?

Any chance you can return the Yamaha and get something that does up-conversion? You won't be getting anywhere near the picture quality you should out of DVD and the projector if you're only feeding it S-

(And isn't there an S- out on the DVD player anyway? You don't list the model, so I couldn't check, but most have it.)

Marantz makes a video up converter. The model is VQ2400 and it runs about $350. It would probably be cheaper to return the receiver and buy a unit that up converts.

basically all i need is a adapter that will convert the 3 jacks of the component lead in to a s-video... because the amp hasnt got video up conversion.. (i have to put a component device in to get picture coming out the component moniter out on the amp..)
i cant run s-video up to the projecter beacause i have to use the component cable which is build into the wall...
will the adapter i suggested do the job.. or is there any other adapter that will do it???
oh, and with the dvd player, its connect to the amp via s-video on the out on the back... :)

WAIT: What you are saying is that in your preparation for this system, you RAN component, but did not run composite, s-video, rgbhv (computer), or audio, or control wiring to your projector?

So, now you want to run everything S-Video instead of component, because you have a couple of sources that aren't component?

OR: Your A/V receiver does not have enough component switching within it to switch all your component devices?

Solutions:
1. Don't use any devices with your projector that are not component. The projector handles all HD/ED/SD sources through component (I have one) so just run your DVD player and your HD cable through the receiver to the projector. If you have a video feed (VCR) throw it out and don't use it.

2. This idea works, but sucks: Run everything s-video. Extron (and other companies) makes s-video to 2-rca (or BNC) adapters. There are a ton of adapters on this page: http://www.extron.com/product/listbytype.asp?subtype=61 and the specific adapter is here: http://www.extron.com/product/product.asp?id=svideobnc&subtype=61

3. The final option is probably the best and has been suggested before... Get a receiver that does what you wired for - upconverts. There are many receivers out there that do a very good job of upconversion and will provide you with more power and bang for your buck.

Hopefully others will read this and realize what happens when you don't run conduit or enough cabling to a projector/plasma location before drywall goes up. It's the least expensive solution, but the one that is most often overlooked.

I've never seen a DVD player with a component video output that didn't also have an S-video output (although such a critter might exist). Unless I'm totally misunderstanding you, just use S-Vid instead. The picture will suffer, but you don't have a lot of options short of running an extra set of cables. This would be visible, though. As an alternative, if there's room in the conduit you may be able to use a fish tape to snake new cables thru the ceiling. Hard to say without seeing your set up.

A stitch in time saves nine, as they say. If you're building from scratch or doing a substantial remodel, you're way better off running extra cabling during the build-out. It's tough to tell what you might someday need, but component cabling, CAT5, DVI & HDMI are all safe bets. Yeah, that's a lot of cable.

He said he only had component built into the wall to the projector. That means he will need an up converter for the components that have only composite and s-video out. The only thing he has with component out is the DVD player. He will have to get an up converter or a receiver with up conversion built in.
