Here's the deal..

I have a Yamaha RXV-540 receiver and have had it for about 1 year..

About a month ago, I started having trouble with the center channel speaker sound. Instead of coming out of the front center speaker, it was coming out of one of three places: nowhere, the right rear, or both the right rear and the left rear.. Note that this only happens about 50-75% of the time, not ALL the time.. Sometimes to remedy the problem I play around with either some of the analog-in cables or the digital coax-in cable.. It's WEIRD.

I took it to the place that I bought it from, that has their own in house service department, and the last two times I brought it to them, they claim they could not duplicate the problem I was describing.

After the past two times in service I thought maybe my speaker wires were touching each other inside the receiver, causing cross-noise (or whatever it's called when two cables interfere with each other), so I bought monster quick-lock FlexiPin connectors, for a more solid connection. I still got the same problem.

I even disconnected all cables except the power, the center, and the two rears, and still, the sound test was still sending the center channel sound to the rear right!

I'm about to tell this store that they can keep their receiver, and please give me another one. Before I do so, I want to know if anyone has any suggestions..

Thanks.

Are you using pre-amp inputs or going digital to the receiver? I wonder if the problem could be in the source...

How does the internal test tone generator do - does it correctly identify the correct speaker?

I don’t know if your amp has this but my dsp-a2 does..its in the menu on the speaker setup were you select large or small for rear and front and for the centre speaker it has an option large, small or none. If for some reason accidentally you have selected none the centre dialog will come from the 2 front speakers so check that out. Hope to have helped you. Thanks

Nope, test tone generator is wrong too.. It's supposed to go in a loop like this:

F.L. -> Center -> F.R. -> R.R. -> R.L (clockwise)

(F.L. = front left, F.R. = front right, R.L. = rear Left, R.R. = rear right)

Instead it does something kind of like this:

F.L. -> Center AND/OR R.R. -> F.R. -> no sound -> R.L.

or it does this:

F.L. -> Center AND/OR R.R. and R.L. together -> F.R. -> R.L.

It's almost like there's contact being made between the center and the rear right channel speaker wires, but I've checked at least the speaker cables themselves, and like I said, I even put the Monster quick-lock connectors on the ends just for a more solid connection but that didn't fix it either.

Have you sent Yamaha an e-mail?
It may be a known issue with them, on that particular model.
Wouldn't hurt to ask..........
Good luck!
