Help!! My Yamaha is acting strange

I recently moved and after hooking everything up, I'm getting a really strange problem. No matter what the volume (including having it all the way to 0), my main speakers make this very loud thrumming sound and then the amp powers off. When I first turned it on, the amp had everything on mute??? If I turn the mains off, the center and surrounds work just fine. I get the same result whether I'm hooking the mains up to either the A or B posts. I tried hooking the amp up to another set of audio speakers I have with their own wires and got the same result. How much trouble am I in here?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Make sure you don't have any loose wire strands that are shorting out one of the main speakers and causing the receiver to go into shutdown. Since you tried both the A & B speaker connection, check wires at the speaker end. Also, you might be able to isolate 1 speaker or 1 set of speaker wire that is bad.

I've used 2 different sets of wires and 3 different sets of speakers, all with the same result.

I second JCPanny, sounds like you have a short. Maybe a piece of wire got into your receiver or something (try blowing it out with pressurized air).

Your receiver is going into "protective" mode and turning itself off to avoid damaging itself.
