Panasonic CT-34WX54 HDTV Monitor
Sony STR-DE895 A/V Reciever
Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder
Direct TV Sat Reciever D10-300

My Sat reciever has composit video & S video connections no component video connections. It is not a HD reciever
I should have clarified this. My Sony reciever, the panasonic HD TV and DVD recorder all have Component video, optical and coaxe as well as the normal everyday connectors. The Sat box hookup has been one of my headaches
Thanks for all the help so far you guys have given me. I feel I am getting closer to some serious sound & video

Help, Help!!!
I have purchased every cable sold, downloaded & printed every hookup diagram in the universe and still can get anything to work right
Can only get either fronts or back speakers to work at a time. Once I got all 4 working but when I tried hooking up another component I lost the sound from 2 of them. No 2 hookup diagrams are the same, some use component vid cables with nothing else betwn TV & recever, some say use component cbl's and optical cable.
I just need someone to point me in the right direction, there are just too many connectors on the back of the Sony and way too many cables to choose from. The Monster diagrams have been no help hooking up any of these components. I have about 8 hr's into this project and nothing works the way it should
My SINCIEREST THANKS in advance for any help

Okay, I'm going to assume that your satellite receiver has component video output. Also, I'm referencing the back panel of the 898 because I can't find info on the 895.

DVD Player: Component video cables to "DVD IN". Use the digital optical out to the SA-CD/CD-in optical connection. Connect the S-Video and stereo analog outputs of VIDEO 1 on your receiver to the primary inputs on your DVD recorder.

Satellite: Connect the component video cables to TV/SAT in on your reciever. Then connect the digital optical output to the TV/SAT optical input on the receiver. If you don't have the option of optical with the satellite, but DO have digital coaxial, then connect the digital coax to a coax input. These should be assignable, so you should be able to change the routing with the receiver settings.

Now, the only thing you should have running to you TV is a set of component cables from your receiver's component output to your TV's input. The sound should come from the speakers connected to your receiver. If you're using your TV as your center channel, then I think you're kinda SOL.

Speakers should be pretty self explanatory. You may have to do some monkeying around in the menus to assign inputs, if necessary. But for the most part, they should be fine. Lemme know if this doesn't work.

I have the 995
Direct TIVO
Sony DVD
Sony CD

Making the assumption you have the same I/O's available

svideo from receiver to tv
svideo from sat to receiver
Svideo from DVD to receiver

Is your Satellite receiver High Def?

Coax digital cable from DVD audio out to receiver in.
Optic cable from Sat receiver to receiver

make sure your DVD player is putting out digital data, most (all?) do not put out digital data from the factory.

Speaker hook up should be straight forward, but configure the receiver for the attached speakers. It's in the menu area. In fact it may be beneficial to do a factory reset and start over.

I listen to music with the receiver set on 2 ch
I watch tv with AFD setting to PL II Movie or Neo 6 Cinema

All of your hookups are the same as my 995 unit. The key is to keep it simple and not be overwhelmed by the hundreds of plugs on the back.

To watch TV, the TV video is set to Video 1 (on my set), receiver turned on and set to sat/tv input or DVD input.

Good luck

Take it one step at a time,

A few things to remember up front, RCA jacks have many uses and are generally color coded.

As faras audio goes, remember, red/white RCA plugs won't give digital sound, only analog DPL.
You'll need either an orange jack (or a toslink connector) for digital sound.

As for video, the yellow jack is for composite video.
You seem familiar withthe "S" video jack so that's good.
The component video jacks are three RCA jacks, generally colored red, blure and green.

First, hook up the speakers to the receiver according to the receiver's directions.

Make sure everything works so far. try the tuner and some ohony surround modes the get noise from all speakers. The sub may or may not work atthiuis time, Check that when you hook up a DVD player.

Now, hook up your monitor. Odds are that onece you get the on screen menus to appear, you're in business.

Keep the receiver's manual handy. Therre's a lot of hidden menus you may need to access to "tell" it about source components. Methinks this is where your problems lie.

Now, hook up the DVD recorder. Concentrate on the PLAYER portion here.
RTFM for the receiver and the DVD unit and keep at it until you get them to work in concert. You should be able to get 5.1 channels (at least) when it's correctly hooked up.

Make sure the DVD player and the receiver work in concert.

Once that's done, do the same for your cable box. Check what audio outputs it offers and how to access them. Have it's manual handy also.

Once all playback functions areworking, then worry about the record function.
