These ERA Design 5's have received glowing reviews and the price and size are right in your wheelhouse. They have pretty good aesthetics, as well. I suggest you add them to your investigation/research list. http://signalpathint.com/index.php/Design-5-Series/

The D4's are also gaining professional kudos. They're a bit smaller, if you prefer such. Here is a Stereophile review. http://www.stereophile.com/budgetcomponents/107era/ They're not very efficient, but your amp should drive them just fine.

Good luck in your search.

Hmm, should I start a flame war or not??? hmmm. wth!
I'd be careful about reviews from web site which compares $4000k and $2000k cables and can find difference....

You must be bored. Here is ERA's review list. YOU tell the OP which one is most reliable/believable. http://signalpathint.com/index.php/era-Reviews/ I could care less. I suggested the speakers for him to "research"...not buy Stereophile.

And by the way...same mag, different reviewers. Analogy....because we are both on Audioholics, would our reviews be equally valid (or invalid)? Oh yeah, Stereophile probably reviewed all the speakers on his list. Guess he shouldn't buy any of them? All reviews, like all speakers are flawed and subjective. That's why HE has to research and audition for himself.

It pains me to say this...and I mean that pretty much literally...but I think you guys have convinced me to throw in the towel on this one. That is, until my budget grows considerably and/or I can convince my wife to at least let me put some bigger bookshelf speakers on stands on top of the hearth.

At this point, I just don't like spending this much money on something that I know I'm not going to be satisfied with. At least, that's how I feel right now...I may change my mind in the morning:rolleyes:

Regardless, I do genuinely appreciate the advice I've been given on this thread. Thanks for your time!

Well...thank goodness we have you around to keep pushing us back up the hill. :) After all, your boredom kept Clint from getting away with a typo!

I'm not a grammar Nazi, but Clint - your spellcheck missed this one:

"It is not clear if HDMI will comp7ete with DVI or Display Port in this market"
:D

Aw, don't give up yet. I urge you to at least give the ERA D4's and one or two others from your list a listen before you assume they won't fill the bill. You might be pleasantly surprised.

If for no other reason than to do more research. Honestly, I don't see how it's going to be feasible, but you never know, a different option could pop up for you down the road.

Wait a second - what about a nearfield setup in the loft - straight across form the chair that's already up there. Do you have a plug up there for power? The sound would easily carry down into the livingroom/kitchen from there. You could set up a high efficiency minimalist system pretty easily in that space, and it would be out of the way so to speak, for the WAF.

Just because they say that it "will not get you all the way there", does not mean it won't sound much better. Please forgive my fellow audioholics; we have a propensity to recommend overkill, no matter what the thread! Hey, it's because we love you. ;)

I can guarantee that the PSB B25s mentioned above can better fill that room, however, the dimensions are slightly exceeded for both of your limitations. I used to own these, and the mids, IMO, get a tad tubby on the lower end, but I don't think you might ever notice except in the case that you've heard only classical music, and for that matter, particularly classical on much superior speakers.

The smaller brother, the B15, meets both requirements.

If you ever get curious about the very recently superceded Image line, these two places are the biggest movers of PSB in the US.

The 170SE meets one of the two limitations.

This speaker above is less aesthetically pleasing, but IMO, has superior off axis response compared to the Images.

SVS has a sale on their small bookshelves, for only $149, but the sensitivity is low at 85. The PSB and 170 are both at 89.

*** Since you are worried about throwing away money, realize that all of the ID (internet direct) companies offer month long trial periods. You ought to look at Aperion, as the reviews are always positive, the finishes are very nice, with my only reservation being that the sensitivity can be very low on particular models. Best of all, Aperion offers free shipping BOTH ways last I checked. Also look at Axiom. Just stay away from the small bookshelves with 4" drivers, which cannot go low enough to even produce your own talking voice properly.

Well, I did end up going to a local hifi store tonight to listen to the PSB Image B6. I listened to them and was very underwhelmed. I will not try to describe my feelings using audiophile lingo because I'll just come off sounding like an idiot. :D They just sounded unexciting and flat to my ears.

The owner of the shop, however, did tell me he had a pair of PSB Stratus series GB-1 he'd sell me for $599 (retail $1100 I think). Apparently PSB will soon be d/cing this line and he wanted to clear his last pair out. He has one in the box and a demo pair I could take home to for a few days to try in my greatroom.

I really liked the sound in the listening room at the store so I brought home the demo's. I only had them hooked up for a few minutes when the kids went to bed and I had to turn them way down. From the few minutes I had them at a good volume, it seemed clear to me that they would have no trouble filling my room.

I'm encouraged but I definitely need more time with them--looking forward to putting some hours on them over the next couple days.

I've pretty much decided at this point that if I'm not happy with the PSB's, I'm going to order (without the benefit of auditioning) either the Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1 or the NHT Classic 3.

But for now, I'm hoping these PSB's will satisfy me--I'd even come in way under budget! :)

Does anyone else have any experience with the GB-1's--especially in comparison to the Sierra 1 or NHT Classic 3?

Thanks again for all the help gents!

No direct experience with the current Stratus line, but I know the ones I'd heard form the past were really nice speakers.
