I am trying to hook up my TV, Digital Cable and my yamaha receiver. but i am having hard to getting the results wanted.
What is the best way to hook up those 3?
I have the digital box from the cable company(rogers), and a Samsung LCD TV, the yamaha htr5890 receiver.
I used a component cable to hookup the audio/video out from the digital box to the htr receiver, then the component out to the monitor in to the Samsung Tv.
When I turn on the Tv, receiver.....and I choose the source on the Samsung to be 'component' all I get is a black and white video and no audio.....
If I bypass the receiver, i would choose the source on my samsung to be HRC.

How do I get audio through my receiver and my 5.1 speaker??? from the tv/cable source?

thanks

Component cables are for video only. If you have component video cables hooked from the cable box to the receiver and component video cables from the monitor out to the tv, that is correct for the video. You now need to connect audio from the cable box to the receiver. If you use a digital connection (optical or coaxial) you will also have to assign the digital input to one of the source selectors. That procedure should be detailed in the manual.

Thanks for your help....I think I am getting close...
I have the RCA audio Out(Red/White cable) from the cable box to the Receiver's Cab/Sat input Audio (Red/White).......But when I switch on the TV, receiver, and on the receiver I select the CBL/SAT source, I don't hear any audio...I see the video from.....
There is no optical connection on the cable/digital box, so I connected another coaxial cable from the digital/cable box (1 wire) to the receiver's coaxial input....However, the Yammy 5890 doesn't have a cbl/sat coaxial, so I just plugged it in the VCR2 input. and I choose that as my receiver source..
Then I get audio.
Is that the correct or best way to hook up the audio???
What is the RCA red/white output from the cable/digital box use for??

thanks.

Cable to receiver

Use the digital coax connection for audio from the cable box to the receiver. This will allow you to send higher quality digital audio to your receiver and if available Dolby Digital or DTS. The RCA connections are there to hook the cable box to a stereo receiver or directly to the TVs speakers. If you would like you watch the TV sometimes without your receiver, then cannect the 2 RCAs from the cable box to the TV's audio input. When using the receiver, the speakers on your TV sould be off.

VCR2 is fine. I use Video 2 for my cable box. The names on the source selectors are just for convenience.

If you used a coax cable from the cable box to the receiver and you get sound, then the channel you were watching is broadcasting digital audio. You have to assign a source input to a digital input and if you didn't do that but still get sound, then vcr2 is assigned by default to the coax digital input you used. If you get no sound from the analog outs, then none of your channels have anlaog audio.

My cable is different. Some of the channels are analog and some are digital. Therefore, I have to connect BOTH analog and digital cables and the receiver automatically switches to the correct output based on what it receives. If both analog and digital signals are present, it gives priority to the digital - that's how most receivers work these days.

It's fuuny I am having problems with this receiver on just hooking up the Tuner to listen to the local FM station to no avail Where the receiver is located was able to get FM broadcast from other receivers but for some reason or another the Yammy is unable to pick up any broadcast at all, has anyone has had the SAME PROBLEM.

It seems that it would be an easy shot to do this, but I don't even get any receptions at all , not even one lousy weak signal.

Are you using the small white wire that came with the receiver? You'll have a coax out in the rear of the receiver. Just stick the small white wire in it, and drape the wire to the front of your receiver. You'll get FM.

The wire that came with my receiver has a cap that fits over the FM coax post with a needle type thing that inserts inside the coax and have hooked it up, and nothing.

I'm assuming that's the orange #9 DVR/VCR 2 coax input, right? That is the one you want. That will give you digital audio.

The RCA red/white is for stereo audio output to a receiver. Coax is digital, and will allow stereo, as well as surround output depending on the broadcast.

As stated earlier, red/green/blue component (video only) "out" from your cable box to r/g/b component "in" on your receiver will yeild the best picture, as long as you continue the r/g/b component cables to the tv set.

Hmmm. Mine came with just a bare thin white wire. I had to splice mine back a ways so the copper stuck inside the coax "in". Maybe it's not making contact? Are you a ways from a major city? You may need a Terk fm booster antenna.

You can also splice off of your cable wire with a splitter and run cable into your fm for reception. I had to do that when I lived in rural PA. It worked great for many stations - picked up stuff in different cities.

I live in the outskirts of a major city and have always able to pick up reception even Am, with this receiver ZIP on neither, by the way tried the bare wire inside the coax and that did not work either.

This receiver is great on movies and Hell on getting radio reception.

Are you able to tune up and down from the receiver front panel or are you trying to use the remote to tune stations?

The reason I ask is because on recent Onkyo models you get zero stations without an antenna and after you connect the antenna, you have to manually tune to stations from the front panel and then store the ones you want to keep as presets. Only then can you tune up or down from the remote.

Other random thoughts:
- Some receivers allow you to set the tuning step size. If I remember correctly, the steps are 5 MHz for North America and 6 MHz everywhere else. Usually the default is 5 MHz and it works fine right out of the box. Can you check the menus or the manual and see if the tuning step size is correct?

- If you are a long way from the stations or high on a hill or low in a valley or have other major obstructions around, the thin wire they supply as an 'antenna' won't do crap. You may have to buy an amplified antenna.

I have tried everything on trying to get the tuner working, I even called Yamaha headquarters and they also suggested an indoor antenna, I told him why? That other receivers that have owned never had to get an additional antenna and all of them are placed in the same room and position. Will be going back to BB and ask the salesman and hopefully can get some answers or another receiver, like the Pioneer 1015.
