Help me make my speakers sound better.

I had these speakers on stands, and they sounded awesome. But I bought this speakers to go in my computer room.
As you can see from the picture, they are "inside" the shelve/cabinet.
They sound horrible, the highs and mids over take the bass. The cabinets act like a horn!
I really like where the speakers are.
Is there any acoustic treatment I can put inside/around the shelve/cabinet they are in? would bass trap in the back/side of speakers work? fill the empty space with books? Any suggestions?

Thank you.

You could try damping the low end but you'll need some pretty thick material to really affect bass frequencies. If you want to go that route, you may want to read up on building bass traps. Here's one link to get you started. There should be lots of good information in this sub-forum as well.

Another way to go would be to either EQ the system or change the speaker crossovers. EQing would probably be easier. Changing the crossovers could be as simple as using smaller resistors in the tweeter L-Pad circuit but could involve re-doing the BSC as well. It would take some careful measurements to know for sure.

If equalizing is practical for you, that would probably be easiest. Otherwise I guess try absorption. Have you tried something simple like sticking pillows or cushions on the shelves?

They may be called bookshelf speakers, but they are not engineered to be placed on a bookshelf. Your setup requires EQ to compensate for the issues for sure.

FIXED! Got acoustic foam, filled the back and sides, and they sound great now! Thanks for the help.
