I am a software developer so by nature I am a technical person. I am starting to "get smart" on the latest tv technology but i need some help. Can anyone either explain or point me to a good article that breaks down the different tech specs you see listed on tv's such as (refresh rates, Hertz, contrast ratio's and dynamic contrast ratios, etc) and which ones are more important to look at more than others and what values for a mid to upper end tv are acceptable?

I am looking at buying a tv probably Feb or March of next year. I'm looking at getting a 46"- 52" 1080p LCD more than likely. I know plasma has its advantages but they seem to be getting phased out. Can anyone start recommending tv's i should be looking at in the 46" - 52" at $1600 or less price point? Can I get a mid to upper end 46-52 tv for 1600 + tax? I will use this tv for the living room with 70% TV and 30% blu-ray movies. Not much on gaming. Thanks in advance!

How about the sticky right above your thread??? :p

Plasma is only getting phased out from manufacturers who can't compete in the category (which there are really only three who compete). Pioneer, Panasonic & Samsung (rated in quality in that order).

The profit margin on LCD's tends to be higher though the cost to manufacture is still higher at this point. That is another reason that many manufacturers have migrated that direction. This will probably change as things move forward though.

In any case, it shows where the true tendancies lie with a company. Performance vs. profit or a good mix of both? The companies doing well with plasma have proven the latter (mix). Many lcd makers went the profit route though they know plasma offers superior results.
