hello all. I'm a bit new to home theater and had some receiver questions.

my theater room is 16x19 feet. I'm set on buying a 5.1 QUAD speaker set. going with their L-ite line up.

my primary use for the theater is for movies and gaming.

I have a ps3 for both bluray and games. I have a sanyo PLV-Z5 to project.

I'm trying to be as specific as possble so I can get more specific advice.

I'm looking for a receiver that is 7.1. will also need HDMI

what is the best bang for the buck receiver for under $800 used or refurbished is fine because I will most likely upgrade in the next year.

anyone? thanks!

Hey, ericcsong, welcome to the forum!

In that price range, I'd recommend the Onkyo 705. I think that it has all of the features that you're looking for, and it costs under $650. If you're looking to upgrade in a year, you might want to also consider the Onkyo 605 (around $450).

I'd also recommend Onkyo and the 7xx series is and has always been the best bang for the buck in the Onkyo lineup. But, for $800 you can get just about any brand to meet your requirements.

Everyone has their 'brand preference' but really it is only developed over years of using one or more receivers. Therefore, the common 'which receiver should I buy' thread gets a lot of responses and is still not useful because you'll only know what you like after having used a particular brand or brands for awhile.

I too would recommend Onkyo but would look into the 805. I have been a huge Denon fan for years, but jumped ship to the Pioneer 84 and it's LFE bug. After that I picked up the Onkyo 875 and must say they hit the ball out of the park. The 805 can be had for right around the 800 dollar mark if you look for it. It is HDMI 1.3 (which means little right now but it's there), THX ultra 2 certified, and has gotten rave reviews by all those who own it.

It looks like evryone here likes Onkyo but I have an Outlaw 1050 which has been replaced by the 1070 and I think it gives great value for the bucks. They are an internet only co. but they will let you try their prod. for 1 month free before you buy. Check them out!

Outlaw does make a fine product, but I don't recall if the 1070 has HDMI.

The 1070 from Outlaw doesn't have HDMI. It has DVI hookups. AND I too think the 705 from Onkyo would be a good choice because of the connectivity it provides. but if you can find an 805 for 800 bones, then that would be even better.

I recommend the Onkyo 705. I purchaed one recently...the hype is definitely real. It's a great receiver. FWIW, I also considered the Yamaha 1700 (< $800) and a refurbished HK 745. The HK 745 can be had for about $800 on Ebay (see HK Store).
