As the tile said I need help in choosing a descent receiver for very descent 5.1 speaker system (Nucleus™ Micro Loudspeaker from Anthony Gallo).
Bought a new home and this came with it, it is in my family room, and in future I intend to build my home theatre in basement (with gears mentioned in my signature ;-)

So there are few things that I would like to know, like which brand and which model?
My chosen brands in the order of preference are:
Denon
Harman Kardon
Yamaha

I was away from forums and all kind of reading material on home theatre (life is very busy) so not sure what came in last 2 years.

So really need your help here, to help you guys following is what I have:
1. PS3
2. HD Cable Box
3. iPod
4. HD Plasma TV
5. Anthony Gallo speakers with subwoofer

Idea is to connect all through HDMI cables. I would say I see this system being used as 50% Music and 50% for Movies.

So guys help me here.

You don't mention what features you are looking for. HD format decoding? hdmi 1.4? Room correction? Preouts for the addition of an amp later? Dolby Volume? Those will help guide you to a model.

The Denons will have a flavor of Audyssey room correction. HK and Yamaha have their own.

If you don't need 3d/ hdmi1.4 there are plenty of deals to be had on older models.

You don't mention Onkyo, Frys has new HT-RC180s for $399 which is a good deal. That's what I have, but I was mainly looking for Audyssey, 4ohm compatible amp and preouts.

Good deals can be had for HKs at their ebay store if you're willing to go the refurb route. I had a 340 and liked it very much, but upgraded for hdmi. There have been issues with HKs and HDMI, in the 254 and 354 models so I chose not to go with them, although this may have since been fixed. Best to surf the forums and see.

Thanks Jcl.

I would want HDMI support for version 1.4a for 3D. Audessy room correction would be nice (what I heard is they are very good comparing to others). Pre-outs will be nice to have as future proof.

With the Marantz for hdmi 1.4 you have to move up to the x005 versions, and even the refurb 5005 at accessories4less is $579, so over budget.

I remember a few other issues with the Marantz. There were issues reported of the units going south, pop of death it was called on AVS forums. Was this sorted out? That is what scared me away when I was looking. There were a few other little issues that may or may not matter (see review here http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/receivers/marantz-sr6004-1/sr6004-setup) - the crossover frequency couldn't be varied by speaker group, but was universal. Also, Audyssey was not applied to hd format sources.

A refurb Onkyo txnr-708 will run $499, so slightly over budget after tax or shipping. So I guess the 608 is what you would be looking at in the Onkyo line.

Denon 1.4 hdmi will be an x11 model. They came out after I had made my purchase so i'm not familiar with them. I had an older 161x model and it was solid for it's price class.

Thanks to all of you guys there.

Is possible to put the brands mentioned in the order of their reliability and sound quality.

No. Reliability, maybe, but for that, one would need to be looking at a large sample size, not personal experience. Ideally, one would look at a carefully done survey of products, as, for example, one finds in Consumer Reports occasionally. Judging from the amount of complaints I have read online (which is not a good way, but is better than just personal experience), Yamaha seems to get very few complaints for reliability. Some of the other brands have had some issues at various times, but for that to be meaningful, we would have to discuss specific product lines, not the brands as a whole. I would not hesitate in buying a Denon or Marantz.

As for sound, if you don't engage any feature not on another product, and if they are used within their design limits (e.g., appropriate impedances, not overdriving the amplifier, etc.), any difference you hear is most likely a result of the placebo effect (i.e., not real). Now, the different features do make a difference, and the design limits of different units are different, so in actual use, you may hear differences that are a result of such things. But I would not concern myself with the ability of any of the major brands to sound good. I would look for the features I wanted, and pay attention to reports of recent reliability problems.

The only differences in SQ you will hear will be a result of the EQ system. I personally prefer Audyssey-based receivers. As for reliability, I think Denon and Yamaha usually don't show up on the boards with too many problems. Onkyo and HK show up regularly and Marantz only with their current line shows up a bit with issues.

Hi,

I am constructing my Home Theater and just bought:

Anthony Gallo Micro Speakers - 100 Watts, 8 Ohms
Pioneer SC-LX86- 140 W/ch (1 kHz, THD 0.08 % @ 8 ohms)

Will they match or will end up blowing off my speakers.

While buying receiver, what should be matched? Wattage, Ohms?

Apologies for my questions are probably too dumb, I am a Newbie for pardons

Thanks
