Help me choose a sub.

PB12-NSD
VTF 3.3 - 200 more than PB12
VTF 2.2 - Can get for same price as PB12

Which would be best at this price? I understand that with the new amp the SVS subs are pretty equal for music.

Interesting theory.
I'm not sure how an Amp helps a sub with music? Whoever told you that is probably being silly. Still The VTF3 would probably be your best option here.

However budget is king. So I suggest you pick one and move on. You won't go wrong either way. In an ABX test they might even be indistinguishable.

I agree with Isiberian, but I'll pick the SVS PB12-NSD for myself. :)

But, that's me.

Cheers,
Bob

I have quiet a few subs (7). For music I would recommend a sealed Sub. For HT a ported sub. Sealed subs a very articulate, where ported subs are a little boomy.

^^^ +1 :) Absolutely agree with your statement Walter.

I also agree with you when you say: "I have 'quiet' a few subs (7)."

* By the way, is it better to say 'quite' than 'quiet'?
Because after looking in my dictionary, it seems quite probable that both could be used, but using 'quiet' fo seven (7) subs, doesn't sound so quiet after all. :)
I am serious, that's why I ask. The word 'quiet' has indeed several definitions.
And also, remember, I'm French, and English is not my native speaking language.
So, I sincerely need an honest input here, a real insight.

Bests to you Walter,
Bob

I guess that's the austrian in me. After 40 years in the US I guess I still don't get it richtig. By the way last night was the first time I ever destroyed a driver in one of my subs, and it was the new one I just got the other day. I thought is was a 400 watt amp, but after blowing the driver I noticed that it was a 1000 Watt Keiga. Thank god my wife is coming back from vacation otherwise I think I might just blow that whole system up one night. You know how it is, the more heinekens the higher the volume.

While the sealed v ported can generalized, a well designed ported can sound very good and equal or better than a sealed (horn loaded subs ie). Cheap ported subs almost always produce some cuff at certain levels, but in a musical non low extension setting ported can work well. I think that at lower price points there will be trade offs. Alot still focus on extension, but flat response and high spl through the mid band will satisfy many. Just my 2 pennies:)

My sealed sub is 12" active 12" passive 1000 watts. It seems to me like it totally intergrates with my sytem. It does'nt sound like a sub, it's just real. Where on the downfiring ported subs you know there is a sub, it just not that articulate. Then again my place is not acoustic friendly and i don't have any basstraps or maybe it's just not set up right, who know maybe it needs some finetuning. Did sound better in my house then my apartment.

So here is a good question, are subs with passive raditors considered sealed:) ;)
That is a good question. Maybe I should have said ported. If I would plug my ports on the other subs would that make a difference? And is it safe to do so. You see my problem is that you can tell that they're there.

Passive radiator designs are closer to ported than sealed.

As for pluging your other ports, I wouldn't as they were not designed to be pluged.

HSU finds a good balance between music and HT. SVS subs will generally dig a little deeper and hit a little harder. You should also look at ePik and Rythmik subs.

I disagree on this one. For every other stage yes. But for subs ported have way more advantages and the port resonance is largely a non-issue like it is in speakers.

You get much flatter response and more headroom typically in a ported design for subs. Plus you get less distortion. Of course for commercial subs my first picks are actually the JL Audio subs for home use. :)
