Help me buy a DVD player, please....

I am a bit confused about the dizzyin array of options and formats out there. Okay, maybe not a bit, but more like... all f%&ked up!

What I really would like is just one device that can play multiple formats, including regular CDs, SACD, audio DVDs, standard DVDs and either HD DVD or BD. If it wouldn't be too much to ask, I would also like for to upscale to 1080p... but I think I may be pushing my luck.

Is there such a beast out there, or am I going to have to buy more than one player?

With limited shelf space on my audio rack, this is a real problem.

Well you can't get a player that does SACD/DVD-audio and Blu-ray/HD DVD. Such a player does not exist. The PS3 will play SACD and Blu-ray as well as upscale DVD. The new Samsung combo player will play Blu-ray/HD DVD as well as upscale DVD. Oppo has DVD players that do SACD/DVD-Audio and upscale DVD. No matter your decision, if you want all these features you have to purchase two components.

OK, so if I can't have it all in one, then what are the best TWO components for my needs?

I have ready a good deal about the Oppo players, and they seem to do pretty good upscaling as well. Would it be best to get one of the Oppo 98x players for most of my needs and then get an HD or BD DVD player for my high def DVD needs?

Damn, I'm gonna need to find another AV Rack!

That's what I did. I bought an Oppo 980, a Toshiba A3 and a Sony BD-S300. That covers them all. If you only want Blu-Ray, you can skip the Toshiba.

One other thought....

If I'm going to have to get two separate players, then is there some way to get some separation between two components on the same shelf?

What I mean is; two components are going to have to share a single shelf on my av rack, so if I put one component on top of the other, is there something I can put between them to elevate the top component and not obstruct the cooling airflow of the bottom component?

I use water rocks personally, once they have been in the water being flattened for hundreds of years by rushing water they add a certain amount of wisdom and smoothness to the sound in my system.:D

i use aluminum tubular bars. not only are they very light, they also provide airspace between them.

but for players, I stack them with no space in between.

i only allow space for amps, receivers and units with air vents up top.
