Help matching new speakers to existing system

Hello all, I need a set of speakers that will best match my system and listening source preferences. possibly also a preamp. Just hoping to bounce my ideas off someone else before spending the blunt.

The Story.
while overseas I have recently had 'help' with my stereo via my toddler -daddy, me and Fireman Sam need a new ladder, your one(cd stacker tray) has stopped working and I can't make the 'sound' (wiggle rca inputs to preamp) anymore. So it's time to finally update my system. Around 1992 I purchased a pair of Denon Mono Blocks -POA4400-, a Harmon/Kardon stereo reciever-HK3400-, a ladder, er, I mean a Denon 6 stacker cd player, and a ridiculously loud pair of Cerwin Vega AT-15s -the story of their recent demise I shan't get into. Insurance has replaced the cd player with a Denon DVD-1730; possibly a mistake, but there you go.

My music tastes have moved since then into classical, vocal-i.e.Filippa Giordano, world, modern grooves, with the occasional regression to dance (electronic bass) when the family are out. I stream a lot of audio from the net (I believe mp3-192kbit quality), and cd the rest. I am aware that my current source quality is not the best. Occasional movies- stereo only- are watched, but primarily audio only use.

The best sounding (to me) speakers I have auditioned so far are the Krix Phoenix ($1500AUD), but I noticed the lack of bass. Soon the stereo shop is getting a pair of Krix Neuphonix which I hope to be impressed with ($3200AUD). As my mono blocks have the power (250w @ 4ohm), and I would prefer not to get a sub, they look just the thing.

The Question.
Am I in the ballpark of a matched system, should I seriously look at a better dedicated cd player (nad etc), and if my preamp is (as I suspect) had it's day, what kind of preamp would best suit for the cd & computer (internet streaming) sources. I vaguely remember being told that my mono blocks would automatically power/stand by if i plugged them into a Denon preamp, that didn't bother me at the time but sounds good now, not sure how to do it though.

Cheers in advance for any opinions.

More info

Ok, oops. Forgot to mention the speakers will be at one end of a large room, similar to a small church in shape (7x12m) with a loft above the speaker end for 3m, mostly timber and a regular amount of household furniture/curtains etc.
