Help! Marantz 5003 video problems

I just got a refurb 5003 for XMas (woohoo!). I hooked it up and everything seemed fine until, I changed channels and my cable box changed from 720P to 1080i. At this point I lost all picture. I then changed from analog to digital, to HD channels and the 5003 would display the pic on some, not on others. There was no consistency with what it would or would not display. It really did not like the change in signal from the cable box.

The cable box is hooked up by HDMI to the 5003 which goes HDMI to my TV.

Has anyone else had the same problem or does anyone know what may be causing this issue?

Also the remote will change volume and perform a few other simple functions but it will not bring up the Menu etc.

Please Help!
thanks

Hi. I'm assuming that you used to have the cable box hooked directly up to the TV, and everything worked fine then. Is that correct?

What do you have the HDMI output resolution ("HDMI OUT RES") set to on the 5003? It's described on page 37 of the owner's manual.

Just run the HDMI directly to TV. Run a separate S/PDIF to receiver. I think an optical from Monoprice could be around $2. You are probably having HDCP handshake issues between cable box and receiver.

You are gaining absolutely nothing by running HDMI thru receiver, OTOH, with a cable signal.

Except perhaps the convenience of not needing to change inputs on the TV for other sources (like disc players).

Macro capable remote would mean not a single extra effort of button pushing is involved.

OTOH, he would benefit by completely avoiding any chance of the receiver doing something funny to the video.

He would also benefit with the flexibility in calibrating for every source.

I knew that you were going to say that! :D The OP would still need to have/get one of those. It's a great point, though.

I just figured if setting the HDMI output resolution fixed the problem, then it was a quick and easy fix.

Thanks for the responses guys!

What seems to have worked is, I changed the cable box video outsource to fixed (once I found a 1080i channel) instead of "Auto" or "Up-convert 1 or 2". I had tried this previously but it was on a 480p channel and I lost my HD picture.

It is working fine now and I have enabled the 5003 video up-conversion and all the non 720p and 1080i channels look much improved!

I still cannot figure why the remote will do nothing but change the volume, it won't even turn the unit off/on.

Thanks again, I love that there is a place to go for help when experiencing these kinds of issues.

is the remote in Receiver mode? Also some of the functions on the remote may require a shift button first.
