Help Making PC HT with Studio Monitors

Hi all, I'm newish to the audio/visual world and I have a few questions for setting up the audio portion of my home theater. I'm going to be using active studio monitors as suggested by my roommate. But,

1) I'm considering the KRK Rokit series RP-6s with the 10s subwoofer or RP-8s without it. The latter option is cheaper but I'm afraid it won't get the big boomy bass I want and if I later decided to get the sub I'm afraid it might be too bassy. Yamaha also makes a nice package with monitors with a 4" woofer and an 8" subwoofer. Any suggestions?

2) I eventually want to get 5.1 but now will only be 2.1 (or 2.0 if I get the 8s). I've looked at 5.1 and 7.1 sound cards but I can't see how powered studio monitors will connect to the tiny sound card jacks. Do I need to get a breakout box that accepts larger cables? Would that retain the 5.1 or 7.1 sound distribution?

3) This may be outside the scope of this site, but...any suggestions on a sound card? In other forums I discovered that Sound Blaster's X-fi chip doesn't jive with the nForce-4 Northbridge of my motherboard. Any non-SB soundcards to suggest?

Thanks for reading and thanks for having a good site! :p

HT options

If you want more speaker options, consider using an entry level HT receiver with un-powered speakers. If you have a receiver or other surround processor, you can simply use a digital audio output from the PC sound card. I added a Chaintech card w/ bitperfect optical output to my PC for about $25.
