Help! - looking for a short height AVR

Just got a new Hitachi LCD RPTV (50V715) with matching stand. Discovered that the shelf height on the stand is only 6" and most of the AVRs (Yamaha, Pioneer, HK, Onkyo) that I am considering buying are 6.5" +. Anybody aware of any decent receivers in the $400-500 price range with a smaller height? Not interested in the cheapo HTIB alternatives.

As an alternative, is it possible to remove the feet from an AVR to lower the height? Would this be advisable or would it create a ventilation problem?

Even if there is a receiver that short, it will not have proper ventilation.

Why not try lowering the shelf so that a quality receiver will fit?

you can get one of the Harman Kardon DPR series (1001, 1005, 2005) to fit. They report being only 4.5 inches high. You should be able to find a DPR 1001 at or near $ 500, since it's last year's model :)

Ckeck out panasonics digital receivers, I believe they are only 3.5 inches tall and they don't produce alot of heat.

This will be your best bet at an affordable price. The newer models, 1005 and 2005, have had better reviews than the original 1001 as the newer digital amp technology starts making its way into more products..

You've probably considered this, but why would you limit your receiver choice based on a tv stand? I realize the Hitachi stand is very cool metal/glass futuristic looking, but isn't sound more important?

My guess is the stand is not intended to be used for a receiver anyway. Probably just big enough for DVD players and cable/antenna boxes. As was stated in an earlier post, the reveiver needs room to breathe, so you'd need a 4" receiver. I don't know af any decent HT receivers that size.

Let us know what you decide.

Thanks for the suggestions

Appreciate all the input. Since WAF is an issue, I was hoping to be able to use the Hitachi stand but doesn't look like this will be possible. Probably will either return the stand for something larger or go with some a separate stand/cabinet for the electronics. Poor planning on my part.

As someone else mentioned below. Check out the Panasonic digital receivers. They will most definitely fit the bill both size and price wise. The model SA-XR70 is now available.
