Help in putting a system together.

I am on a budget of 1,000 dollars. I have looked at so many receivers and speakers, I am not sure which direction to go in. This system will be going into a bedroom that has been turned into a tv room. The bedroom is not large. The primary use for this system will be to watch movies and tv shows. If you have any advice, that would be great.

I do have a Blu-ray player along with wifi inside the house.

Those are some good options that have been provided. While I was at the accessories 4 less page, I saw they have a Yamaha rx-v677 and focal sib/cub 3 package for 799.99. Is that any good?

Yamaha is a decent choice for receiver

The Sib would be better as surround speakers - and the Cub sub is a wimpy one

Yamaha AVR should be fine too. I'd also say skip the Sib/Cub since they're better suited to probably a desktop system or a very small room (or surrounds for the Sib as mentioned), even though they're not bad speakers. If you shop around for the Pioneers, you can find them new pretty cheap. Newegg, bhphoto, Best Buy, and often Amazon. I would say the AA upgraded versions would totally be worth it since speakers are the biggest factor in your sound, even if that means going with just the front three at first as mentioned.

With $1000 available now, I'd go for quality over quantity and map out a clear upgrade path to a full (5.2) system.

Start with a good solid 2.1 system comprising smaller bookshelf speakers (suitable for surround use later) and, for your sized room, a good quality compact sealed sub.

If you're coming from "not much", a properly set up good quality 2.1 system will keep a :D on your face for a few months while you save to make your next purchase. The idea is to get a bit aspirational with your speaker shopping, pick a "family" of speakers you really like and buy the small pair of bookshelves from that range. Ultimately, you'll end up with a much better system than buying the 5 speakers plus sub you can afford now. Edit: You'll need to do some research to satisfy yourself that the speaker line chosen will not be discontinued during the next 12 - 18 months.

If you're interested in pursuing the expandable 2.1 idea, here are some well regarded speaker "families" to get you started:

I'm sure there's some others I've forgotten... ;)

Speakers: Of the above, my pick is the Ascend Acoustics HTM-200 SE's. ($330 shipped.) These are a high performing sealed design that make ideal surrounds later. Subsequent steps involve moving towards CMT-340 SE's for L/C/R. (Six matching 6.5" woofers across the front in a smaller room will be pretty special.)

Sub: No contest. SVS SB-1000 | Black Ash | Outlet | 1239. ($450 shipped.)

AVR: Try to get yourself as far up the Audyssey pecking order as you can with a factory refurbished or used Denon. Refurbished: DENON AVR-X1000 5.1 Channel Networking Receiver with AirPlay | Accessories4less. ($220 shipped.)

The next steps are:

  1. Matching centre channel (Run "phantom" mode 'till then.)

  2. Larger matching mains; move current ones to surrounds

  3. Audio measurement gear (Like this: Dayton Audio OmniMic V2 Precision Measurement System.)

  4. Second identical sub

  5. Down the rabbit hole... ;) :D

Thanks for the help and suggestions for speakers. One more question, what do you think about Orb speakers?

They could work well for front channels, in a walk in closet.

Want some decent sound up front - then get bookshelf speakers.

Need to take note - we have recommended some decent speakers for a tight budget.

I have taking a good look on the speakers that people have provided to me. I do like all of them, but I am leaning towards the system that giegar laid out. How good are refurbished receivers?
